So I got an email from my dealer a few days ago. They said they couldn't believe it's already been a year since I bought my Highlander o_O and asked if I still owned it. I said yes, I still own my TUNDRA and love it. Then they said they had a "customer" who was looking for a truck "just like mine" and asked if I would consider trading it in if they could get me into to new truck with the same payments. I said "SURE!", I'd be interested in a brand new Platinum straight up for my 2018 Limited with 7k miles. Then they said that doesn't sound too unreasonable and that they'd get back to me.

I got a call from a sales manager the next day and he said he had a great offer for me: I only had to trade them my truck and $17,000 and they'd get me into a Platinum! Wow, what a deal! They obviously don't take notes on how I negotiated when I bought my truck, or even that I bought a truck for that matter. He told me the 2018 Platinum was worth $50k ($53k minus rebate), and when I told him I know I can get a Platinum for much less than that he acted like he was offering me a smokin' deal. I swear they have no shame in trying to screw people.

Anyway, I had no intention of trading my truck in and just wanted to play with them for a while. I was expecting a ridiculous offer, but I don't know why I was so surprised at how stupid they thought I was.

Well, their job is sales. They send out emails / cards saying the same to many. Can’t blame them for trying.

Yes, I know. Just saying it's pretty lazy to not even remember what I bought from them (Highlander?) and immediately try to bend me over. At least keep it generic and say it's been a year since I bought my "vehicle".

Its that Toyota trade in program. They called and claimed they can trade you into a brand new vehicle for similar payment. While they didnt get me with the BS it did get me looking. I used the USAA True car program which sent what I was looking for to 8 different dealerships who I then had compete against each other.

On a related note, I was looking at a Charger (6.4L) online today. I know I could trade in Betsy and walk out with no payments. I miss that sports car life at times.

That’s the oldest sales tactics in the book. All dealerships will tell you that they need your vehicle and they can put you into a new model for less than what you’re paying (if you have payments), now. It’s a win win for dealerships if they can get a customer to trade in their vehicle and buy another from them at the same time.

I once had a Toyota dealership called me to let me know how much they needed my year old (still new) vehicle. According to them, there was a shortage in my vehicle and they needed it to help supply the high demand. So, I told the salesman over the phone, that, if there is such a high demand for my vehicle, I must have a gem of a vehicle. So, why would I want to get rid of it? He couldn’t answer my question, so, I hung up the phone:)

I got a good deal on my 2013 Tacoma after getting one of these cards telling me they would give me like $11.5k for my 2009. I mailed it back asking what kind of fool they think I am. I stated they know the real value of my truck and it certainly is not $11.5k. Blue at the time was close to $19k. I got a reply from the top sales dog. After working with the sales director for a couple of months I ended up getting the deal I wanted. When we talked about the card he said some marketing company in Iowa mails those. When I bought my Tundra the same dealer had sent me a card with a $500 customer loyalty bonus. I negotiated my best deal and said now for the loyalty bonus. They said they were already as low as they could go. I said so that card is not worth the paper it is printed on and went some where else.

it's kinda like the "I had another guy looking at it yesterday so don't wait long" And you see the same vehicle on the lot a month later.

I worked a deal on the GMC with the sales guy. We got within $200.00, he wouldn't budge. I told him "You know, I could go to lunch, go home and have a good night sleep tonight. If I walk away from this, you'd lose sleep over this $200 bucks." He said I was right and made the deal.

Ha! Took my wife to the big city shopping on her birthday Saturday. Saw something on display in the mall that I could trade-in my Tundra for and be broke for the rest of my life. A 4 passenger, 4 door, 4.0L twin-turbocharged V-8, AWD Porsche Panamera. 550 HP, 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, 190MPH topend. All for a mere $176,400.

Bought her a sandwich for lunch and came home.

Yeah I’ve been looking at the RC F. I wish I could drive one before buying but there aren’t any within a couple hundred miles of Denver. May be a trip to Albuquerque in the not too distant future.

I got a call last week from the GMC dealership I bought my 2011 Sierra from...in 2011. I made the mistake of trading that truck on a ford *spit* back in 2014. The GMC dealer has been told this once a year, every year since 2014. For some reason they keep calling back and asking me to trade in the Sierra.

Unfortunately, I missed this call and only got the voicemail. I would have told them I've gone full circle back to Toyota, forgot how good the Kool Aid tasted and my next truck will be a 2014+ Tundra.

I wouldn't take less than $15K for mine. LOL.

    Here’s the check list:
    1) New tattoo
    2) New body piercing (this used to be an earring, now it’s more likely to be nipples)
    3) Have a quick affair and try out some new arm candy
    4) Get a hot new sports car (see Dodge Charger, above)

    Not always in this order....

Lately I've been getting these emails and postcards, must be just that time of year or something. I will say that even though I'm not a complete idiot and know how the game works, the original offer on trading my truck wasn't a total insult (as far as dealers go). The dealer I bought my 2014 SR5 2wd Crewmax from offered a bit over $25k for it on trade, which for the usual starting offer is around what I'd expect.
