De-canadianizing a 2021 Sequoia

Hello

I'm assuming the answer to this question would apply to both Tundras and Sequoias.

In Canada there's some kind of law requiring that the headlights cannot be turned off. Therefore any car sold in Canada doesn't have an "Off" setting for the headlights.

When you turn the key on: the lights will be at least in low power mode, and you can switch to full strength or auto and/or turn the high beams on.

I would like to be able to turn the headlights off completely. Does anyone here know what would be involved? Is it just the switch that I need to replace with the american version or is it more complicated than that?

I'm traveling through the USA for the next 5 weeks, so I should be able to buy things they don't sell in Canada.

I'd like to think it's just the controls mounted on the steering wheel. That's where I would start. Instead of an off switch wired in for US models, it just might be a missing selector setting for Canadian models?

 

As the owner of a formerly Canadian tundra… I’m interested in the same.

no off position on my stalk. Only has the DRL, then parking lights (but the led drls do not dim) or headlights on.

Minor annoyance but if I can swap in a US turn signal stalk/ headlight switch, that would be nice!

It will take me a while to find my way around these documents, I've never dealt with anything more than a fuse list before

Canada has a daytime running light law. All new vehicles require it. However, most will turn off if the parking brake is activated. Just push in the parking brake in slightly and see if they turn off. Thats a temporary fix and will lead you down the right wiring path.

It isn’t, I moved to Canada with my American tundra and bought the Canadian switch. The Canadian switch is wired differently than the US one. I probably could have attempted to rewire the entire thing but it was a PITA.

actually, if memory serves, even the position of the high and low beams were different on the switch and I did rewire that part… it’s been a minute.

update, yep, the switch has different positions for on off etc than the US one. Here’s a picture of the Canadian circuit board I was modifying to match the US truck.

Is it just the two wires coming out of the switch? Was the replacement plug-and-play? Was it hard to get the part you needed? I'm having a hard time finding it on autoparts.toyota.com

Why did you do the replacement? I live in Canada and I don't feel that having an american-style switch would be problematic. I always have mine set to auto when driving. And when not driving it doesn't matter from a legal point of view. Sometimes it matters to me though.

 

I moved to Canada. Canadian regulations require that day time running lights be on 100% of the time and that you can’t be able to turn them off. When you import a vehicle, less than 15 years old I believe, you have to update to Canadian standards. They do two inspections, one federal, which can ONLY be done at Canadian tire and one provincial which can be done at any provincially licensed mechanic.

No there are a dozen or so wires (this is from memory). The switch in mine has the electric steering column as I have a 1794. The plug is the same but the wires are in completely different places.

 

I'll stop by one or two dealerships today or tomorrow in Vermont, and see if they will know for sure, and whether they will have the part in stock.

 

Interesting and annoying. I always drive with my lights on, but on my Canadian 2014 1794 I have off, DRL, headlights, auto. Perhaps an earlier Canadian model would also have what you need. It's nice to have the option. It's the irresponsible people who cause these laws to be made.

 

Ouch, the dealer said the replacement is 169.41$

I guess that's not unreasonable since it's a much more complicated part than simply a switch.

He gave me the part number 84140-0C071. I'm trying to confirm whether that's the right part number. An aweful lot of corollas turn up in my searches.
