Ok guys i have decided to let my 2012 Tundra go........I think.

The steering rack went out for a second time. The rack is under warranty so that would be free but the quote i got from the Toyota dealership to replace the pump and all labor is:
    • Pump Labor = $319
    • Rack&Pinon labor = $2563.76
    • PS Fluid Flush = $119.95
    • Alignment = $99.95
This doesnt include the pump itself which is probably around $300.
That is a total of $3,402.66.

Don't want to just waste that money on my truck again so i started contemplating trading it in for a new truck with options that i want. If i can get enough out of the truck with the blown steering rack then it makes sense to just upgrade and avoid the loss on labor.

I will transfer over most of the aftermarket items on my truck to save cost. Then i can sell the stock suspension and wheels/tires to make up some of the cost as well.

I have a line on some wheels and tires. Just need to find some stock suspension.

Because im an engineer and crazy i am going to be doing a quick spreadsheet to look at what the best option is for me.

    Features I want:
    • Black leather seats
    • Heated seats
    • Color matched front bumper
    • Color matched rear bumper
    • Color matched grill surround
    • Black or color matched handles
    • Black or color matched mirror caps
    Considering Models:
    • TRD Sport
    • Limited
    • Platinum
    • Pro
    Considering Colors:
    • Black
    • Cement
    • MGM
    • Voodo Blue
    • Calvary Blue

How much are you going to try and sell your truck for with a blown steering rack? That is going to be a hard sell, IMO. One of those "mechanics specials" - that usually only go for a pretty severely discounted price.

Have you been wanting to get a new truck anyway? If the answer is yes, then I would say that this might be a good time to just go trade it in, if you don't want to hassle with the repair. If the answer is no, then I would just fix the steering rack and keep on truckin. I recently went through a period where I was pretty fed up with my Tundra and almost sold it. I think it must have sensed that I was going to, because for the last 40,000 miles or so it has been running great (knock on wood). One thing, though - if I would have sold it, I would have fixed all of the problems prior to selling.

I let go of my 2012 DC 2 years ago. Its an SR only. 125K miles on it. Paid off. Dealer wants $16500 on it. I held and they gave me what I wanted. They made me drive the 3rd gen tundra for a week just to let my truck go. SR5 Black, leather seats ( no heated seats needed here in Fl hehehe), navigation, back up cam, line x bed. 40K miles or 3 years free maintenance. They gave me $20K for the my old 12 DC. Im happy Tundra owner.:bananadance:

Go for it @csuviper. My choice will be, Black...TRD black , black black. Kill the chrome...hehehe. Happy shopping.

Yep....tend to agree on this. You should be able to get a decent value for trade in. It would be tough to eat that labor cost again. It's a nice truck but weird how the r&p keeps failing. Maybe it's hexed.....
You left off SR5 so I am assuming you want some goodies. TRD Sport sounds good. The PRO....you could just leave as is like you mentioned and have a decent off road rig...

YOU LEFT OFF SUPER WHITE!!! :eek2::eek::eek2::eek::eek2::eek::eek2::eek:

They just quoted me $22k trade in value. Stock SR5 on KBB is about $23k. They do know i am leaving them with a small lift with stock suspension and wheels and tires.

I have been thinking of trading for a while. Especially after my accident.

If i go black, it will be or eventually will be all black. Hard to say no to black as the last two trucks have been black. I just hate how every scratch shows up.

Scratches seem to buff out quite well. Our paint isn't that great to begin with. Dirt doesn't stand out too bad actually.

Scratches blow! Shows up as separate grey color And to me is super noticeable. Paint is weak as fuck too. Dirt blends in and cant tell how dirty it really is untill you get close angles. Ceramic coat helps a ton in keeping clean though.

oorrr. just have them give you the new rack and do it your self...

save your self a lot of time and headache..

just saying. the ammount of labor to swap over all the parts and reinstall and finding stock parts getting into a new truck payment etc is way more than 3500$ and if they warranty the rack its 0 $ just your time to swap it, I could probably do that rack job in 6 hrs or less now.. ive done it three times.

BTW they will also take your truck and subtract 5k $ off the offer price for the blown rack, the book calls for removing the engine to replace the rack. So they will shit all over you for it.

I have a black Tundra, a Radiant Red Tundra, and a MGM Sequoia. The Sequoia always looks cleanest, and the scratches are much less noticeable. The downside is my balls shrink when I get in it.

you have a low miles truck. only issue seems to be the steering rack. what is the root cause of the issue ?
you might buy a gen 3 and end up with cam tower leak or another blown steering rack down the road..then what ?
i would get a quote from a mechanic shop. It's usually cheaper and also try to understand why it keeps failing.

Not biased but you should go with Cement. It hides scratches and dirt very well. Actually had the head mechanic at the dealership offer to buy the truck. So just do the right thing and get Cement :)

the first three revisions of our racks had an internal seal issue, the new 4th revision is good to go, see that thread i posted. Ive replaced 3 racks... and root cause is just that, bad seals. But things like lifts can speed up the failure rate. And yeah cam tower issues plague all 5.7 v8's and the rack issue is still a potential. i say fix it and go. SO much easier than all that other stuff.. but if you want a new truck then thats the answer
