So far only thing I’m not loving about this Tundra is the immense noise/rattle when the rear window is down. It makes the Bronco I just sold sound like a Lexus which…is extremely frustrating. After digging through this site I have gathered the following based on a variety of posts:

    1) SEEMS like it is coming from the rear window itself but it is actually a combo of the bed frame mounting points and possibly tailgate suspension straps making the noise… only super-noticeable when rear window is rolled down.

    2) Seems the possible fixes are to unbolt the six t55 bed bolts, lift bed slightly in order to heavily grease the contact points and/or add nylon washers. For tailgate straps, add a small o-ring to the fastening posts to take up any extra play in it.

    3) Toyota dealers are all incapable of/don’t care to fix the issue whatsoever if you bring it to their attention.

Are these three points the consensus at this point? The rear power window was a major selling point to me for this vehicle and all the awful noise is making it almost useless. Would love to hear about any strategies/success stories related to alleviating the issue. Thanks!

I have/had the rattle and also thought it was the rear window. Toyota spent a couple hours trying to figure out where it came from. They rode around the parking lot with techs in the bed. It was coming from the driver side tailgate cable coincidentally where the slightly bigger gap is compared to passenger side. It went away after I put a tonneau cover on

I think there are two different noises. The popping clicking bed bolt contact point noise and the tailgate noise over medium to large bumps. You found the discussion on the bed bolts but there was one more related to tailgate rattle. The passenger side hinge has an opening in the tailgate side of the hinge assembly for removal of the tailgate. Some have put a zip tie around the outside of the hinge to keep it from bouncing over bumps. This works great if you are trying to address the tailgate rattle. Good luck, rattles get pretty annoying.

I solved the awful rattle this morning by adding 1/2” nylon washers from Home Depot and a big glob of marine grease under each of the 6 contact points under the t55 bed screws. Job made very easy by using a floor jack and piece of 4x4 to slightly lift the bed about an inch at each location so you can line up the nylon washers with the screw holes. There is still a little noise from tailgate but 90%+ of the annoyance is gone. Will play around with some of the tailgate remedies later on but needless to say it was well worth the hour of work for those bed mounts!

I had the rattle that sounded like the window rattling. Loosened all the bed bolts then retorqued. My bed popped as if it was relieving tension once all bolts were loose. I didn't add any washers or grease and the rattle is gone. Took about 15 minutes, most of which was clearing the bed liner out of the bolts.

Wow, good job on this fix. You nailed it.

I brought instructions to fix this one to the dealership about two years ago, to do exactly what you did, and they just said they don't do any of that and must have a tsb from Toyota to do any such repairs. Then while at it they also scratched side of my truck while driving it out from their parking lot

Luckily these noises went away after I installed a heavy camper shell.
