My thoughts: Toyota doesn’t make a vehicle targeted at “crawlers” (although many folks use them that way) so I am not surprised that they’re not class leading in that metric.

I see 7 shitboxes listed that I'm too busy to deal with having to keep taking them in for warranty work.
If I wanted a crawler, I would build a dedicated rig because it will get beat on every outing. Nothing worse than getting stuck on a trail behind people afraid to scratch their new Bronco.

If you needed that much crawl ratio, you probably wouldnt be driving a Tundra. Most pickups since 4wd was introduced have a crawl ratio between 30 and 50:1.

No 4runner in this lineup? Anyways, kind of a silly comparison. Very few people buy half tons, which all do poorly, to crawl.

Cool chart, didn't know heeps and the bronco crawl ratio was so low. Ive never felt the need personally for more than 30:1 unless it's a manual, though I like to go over 0.1mph when "crawling" :D

I'm at 60:1, and that feels pretty good. I would like 65-70:1 with a few hundred more HP...on the Heep.

    Truck is the standard 31:1

My thoughts are less on the crawl ratio (which I agree for trucks this size is generally less than relevant stat) but how different the Tundra would feel with a 9/10 speed transmission and a higher first gear ratio. It would be even more of a towing beast.

    A bunch
It will be significantly different to drive. Going to the Ram 8 speed isn't much, but Ford 10 speeds are a totally different animal. Most of the time empty you start out in 2 or 3, 1 is barely used, and then on the highway empty it's up and down from 8 to 10 quite a lot. It's why I'd love semi-auto capability - small hill keep it in 10 and let the engine deal with it, larger hill drop it to 8 or 7. Not the current gear limiter but an actual semi-auto where I pick the gear.

Honestly I think the current 1st gear in the Tundra is low enough, if you need more torque than that go get a tractor. 10 speed makes a world of difference cruising at highway speed - for towing and fuel mileage.

Oh, I'm sure it would be a billet block with all aftermarket goodies and an RPM Transmission. :anonymous:

Blasphemy! I only said that cause of what you said earlier in the thread. ;)

I own a JL Rubicon. It is awesome. Wife and I go back and forth about putting down a deposit on a 2022 392. Jeep IMO has come a long way.

Just noticed that Chevrolet no longer puts 4 low in their transfer case for their regular 4x4 half tons. When did that change? Surprised that not many folks on here care about toyota low range off road capability from the factory. I guess folks are wanting highly reliable highway trucks with crawl control for off road work. I'd like to see toyota delete crawl control and add true crawl gear and 2 lockers.

I love that these crawl numbers (for vehicles that are decidedly NOT crawlers, well except for the Jeeps) are presented in the same colors as safety ratings. Red = danger!! Better trade your Yota in on something in the green before your whole family dies while you’re “crawling” a gravel road!

You're not taking a tundra through anything very rough regardless, so the crawl ratio is enough for 99% of people. Plus being an automatic makes crawl ratio arguably less important, since you're not committed to moving once you take your foot off the brake like a manual. If you have enough torque to climb the obstacle, then you can climb it as slow as you want assuming the tranny is staying cool. In my opinion crawl ratio is a metric that's mostly relevant to manuals, since it says how slow can you go without slipping the clutch which is (arguably) much worse than an automatic slipping.

If you get either the 6.2 or the Z71/X31 off road package, you get the 2 speed transfer case. Seems like GM is trying not to offer the 10 speed with the 5.3 too much anyway.

Oem tonneau, side steps, spray in liner. Trd skidplate.

That is the same design toyota has always used. Gears go in from the other side....

It's a 3rd member, there is no diff cover like a one ton axle. The whole differential is a stand alone unit that slides out the front of the axle (Toyota 8", 9.5", 10.5", Ford 9", etc. are all like this), versus like a Dana 60 where everything is mounted inside the axle directly.

$1400 just for the parts lol. Nope. 275 65 AT3s it is...

Do wish toyota would get a little more aggressive with gearing though. Or at least stop crawl control from sounding like is tearing the front end out of the truck.

I’ve noticed you made a few threads and posts about the crawl ratio in the 2022 thread. What do you do or what is your goal? Do you rock climb often? I’m just wondering why it’s so important to you in a half ton.
