Damn!! At least you have fingers. I have a neighbor a street over who lost all 5 fingers on one hand. He was working on a 5 head moulder and set his hand down right into the jointing cutterhead. That guy still works on cars and builds furniture with only one hand! He does not have much but he is one of the happiest guys i know.

Yes I really am lucky, stupid, but lucky. My fingers work to 95% of what they were. Feeling is 85%-95% across the three. For about a year it felt like they were on fire...literally. Now I don't notice them unless I think about it, then it hurts up to my elbow like I hit my funny bone really hard. The mind works in strange ways. I feel for the O.P. as my injury was done with a razor sharp knife not a crushing injury although I have smashed fingers to the point of needing stitches. I now only have two fingers that have not had stitches.

Truth is, my accident could have easily been much worse. My right hand came dangerously close to being involved as well, not to mention that the injury to the left could have easily been much worse. Another inch and all four fingers would have been involved.

WTF! He said no pics would be shown of the carnage! Now you go and show the fuckery! I was reading the thread with compassion, now I'm just pissed!

These type of picks stick in my head. Call me a pussy if you like, but they really bother me.i_sOD4tXUi7QkEI1NA4HZGGfcFe1LRcXnyHKW73b_318089931aa80e05814314963d35c7f7db855cd6.jpg

Had a follow up with the surgeon last week, so far, so good there. He did change his estimated time off work from 3-4 weeks initially up to three months now. That’s a big relief in way, but also leaves me wondering how to stay sane until this all blows over and I can get back to two handed life. My daily post count must be nearing @4x4_Angel territory.

These days the pain varies greatly - still eating advil and tylenol like candy, but trying to cut down on the T3’s. Pain comes in waves at times, and for some reason usually gets much worse late in the evening. Perfect for trying to fall asleep. :censored:

I did a very similar thing a few years back, but I was in a big rush first thing in the morning. Too many sites on the go and in a hurry to keep up... JCB bit off the end of my ring finger. Stupid on my part. 3 surgeries later and it's not too bad.

Take it easy for awhile and get healed up, Phil! All the best.

It’s now been a month, physio started last week, and it’s slowly starting to feel like my hand again, not some foreign object I’m carrying around elevated. Pain levels are starting to drop this past week, and I haven’t taken codeine in as long. Still pretty painful at times, but improving, and swelling is going down slowly.

It looks a bit better cleaned up, at least with bandages. I saw the end of “stumpy” last week, wasn’t pretty. :eek2: :puke: Once it heals over better it should be easier to look at, I hope. I’m normally OK with “gore” but this is different somehow. But all in good time.

Glad you're headed in the right direction, Phil! Great news!

Hope your 'stumpy' heals up well, with better aesthetics than mine did. I almost guarantee you'll drop more stuff than you ever have in all your life.

8 weeks since injury tomorrow, and still making good progress. Physio has my hand moving much better, still stiff and sore, but greatly improved. Pain still comes and goes, but levels and frequency are still dropping slowly.

And last night while cleaning and redressing, the middle finger (that was crushed at the tip but not amputated) gave up the large cap / scab revealing the new skin and looking awesome. The nail is still going to fall out at some point, but it’s looking great compared to what it was.

The “stumpy” one is looking better too, but not enough to make me want to take a picture of it.

Last week I had another appointment with my surgeon, he was happy with the progress and gave the OK for return to work on modified duties, so long as the hand not to be used, and kept clean and dry.

So Tuesday morning rolls around, and I’m getting ready to go in for afternoon shift, take the bandage off “stumpy” and the big, nasty cap of scab and dissolving stitches has come off. Feels a lot better with that off, but extremely sensitive.

Being back at work has brought it’s challenges, at first I was excited to go back, but I’ve been put into a mainly supervisory role for modified duties, and the stress of trying to heard cats around the shop isn’t fun. I’m really dreading going back to full duties as a mechanic now as well. I’m thinking I want to jump ship to the parts department, but we’ll have to see how this cookie crumbles.

Here's mine.. don't worry in a while the sensitivity gets back to normal and you won't even miss what's gone. I look at it like a warning to make me safer to prevent a bad accident.

Good luck in whatever direction you go Phil.

I’ve had hand injuries that would make the Pope drop an F Bomb. So I couldn’t even imagine this.

Well, at the three month mark now. The nail fell off the “bird finger” a few days ago, and the new one is 1/2 grown in, albeit rough and a bit distorted.

Both fingers are still quite sensitive on the ends, but not too bad unless bumped. That feels a lot like hitting your funny bone the wrong way, just more intense.

I’m still getting physio twice a week working on reducing the “rigor mortis” in the two fingers and the rest of the hand, as well as increasing grip strength. That’s still around 25% when compared to my right hand. Progress is slow, but still going the right way.

The ring finger gets cold very easily, and it’s not even cold outside yet. Not a lot of fun, but pretty normal according to the doc, and likey to improve.

I am doing more with the left hand all the time, both at work and not. I took my ATV for a short ride yesterday evening, which was OK other than the cold finger, as it was raining when I was riding. Heated grips for the quad arrive this week. :D Also started off my hunting season with bagging a ruffed grouse a 1/4 mile into the ride.

Well phuk. Last week stumpy started getting sore and inflamed, then started growing a painful lump at the amputation area.

Went and played in traffic going to see the doc in the city today, and the news... He figures there is some fingernail growing internally, and another surgery will be needed to take it and the remaining nailbed out. So excited right now, one step forward, two steps back... Eating vitamin I (ibuprofen) regularly again, but at least I can look forward to more time off work.
