Great setup Marc! Be sure and keep us updated with how much use you get out of your resin.

I’m wondering if the refillable cartridges will work in my CR system the same way their prefilled ones do. The tube in mine came loose again, so I had to take it back apart and secure it again. It’s a bit of a pain to keep the tubes in place while screwing the housing back on. If these work the same way the CR cartridges do, it would eliminate that issue.

I've had one for about 10 years now. It's been the greatest single thing i've added to my car washing arsenal. I finally gave in and did this mod in the original post about 2 months ago.....curious to see how it goes.

    I don't see why not.
My understanding, at least for the resin portion, it's much less then getting them prefilled.

The price is higher for the prefilled, and they haven’t lasted long for me.

    Update:
So I’ve used the system on about 12 times already. I noticed a really big difference coming out of the gate washing the truck. My brother has a black tundra and he hates washing his truck....haha. We gave his a shot here and even that made a huge difference. Now I’m setting up the same system in his garage.

Here is the truck just washed...,

When I’m not working with the truck. This is my fun toy, 16, M3 with a 6 speed, fully loaded. Literally stole this car, had only 10k miles on it. Paid only ⅓ of its original price. Good deals to be made if your in market for one.

Sorry it's taken so long to get Fleck performance numbers for you and others @War Machine . I started to test a sample for you and found my chemicals were expired by about two years. I ordered and received a new hardness test kit and have some results for you.

Based on a 7 day regeneration cycle, I believe my softener will regenerate tonight (Saturday). Remaining soft water volume is currently indicated as 595 gallons, down from 1550 gallons after regeneration. I have the 48K grain size softener, and there is only my wife and myself; with more family members you might require a shorter regeneration cycle or a larger media bed. I took a water sample from my utility room faucet, and found softened water hardness is STILL less than 1 grain/gallon, which is the accuracy threshold of the kit I'm using. An incoming raw water sample indicated hardness of the raw water at 28 grains/gallon.

That’s some pretty incredible results, from 28 to 1 per gallon. I really need to check what my water is at before any filtering. I’ve never seen harder water than what I have at home. I’ve turned off my sprinklers near my driveway because just the mist was leaving bad spots on my vehicles. There’s some on my truck I’m going to have to use my polisher to get off.

A whole home water softener is at the top of my list of projects I need to get done in the near future. I have a pretty big expense this summer that’s put some things on hold. Once I’m past it I’m going to start chipping away at my list. The hard water is a pretty big issue far beyond washing cars. It’s a constant battle keeping my countertops and shower doors free of mineral deposits, and it’s not doing our skin and hair any favors either. My wife travels out of town for work somewhat regularly, and always comments on how much better her hair feels after hotel showers.

Installing a good softener might elevate you to "genius" status deserving of special treatment... :D

Here's a pic. I did the install myself. It was complicated by the 0.5 cubic foot charcoal filter behind the salt bin that removes high chlorine content from the water company (required for media life).

Considering how completely worthless I am at that kind of thing, I’d have to pay to have it installed.

I’ll definitely get that kit you recommended. Thanks for the link!

Soap/shampoo/detergents lather up better and last longer, water heater tank lasts longer, no toilet rings, no mineral deposits on the shower glass, water tastes better...what's not to like? (Well, maybe there is the money, and the work if you install.) :D

I hit 1 ppm today! Started using the unit in April - and wash my wife’s GX and my truck once a week or so, maybe every two weeks. I was hoping for more... anyway, still worth the mod? I see the cr exchange is $109 for two cartridges.

I think the conversion is better than the cartridges, but I do believe some of the other guys here have come up with even better systems.

I am going to see how many spots I can see as I go above 1 ppm. I mean even 5 ppm seems pretty damn pure, no? With my black truck, I soon will find out!

I will test 4 ppm on my black truck next time. But assuming I will get the same results as you since the numbers should not lie.

I hadn’t replaced my cartridges since I purchased DIC 20 May 2018. I was thinking maybe my meter wasn’t working properly so as a test, I removed the cartridges and then ran water through it.....hit 65 on the meter. So, I’m 14 months in and still at 0. Anyone else test their water without the filters to see what it shows? Not sure if 65 is really high or low. Thoughts?

On my wife’s pearl GX I didn’t notice 4 ppm even on the windows. Washed tonight and I got up to 8 ppm. I definitely see water marks now, especially on the windows. Time to change our the resin.

Until then - water purification experts.. where is the best place for me to get the best deal on replacement mixed bed DI resin for my CR spotless/DI rinse application?

I bit the bullet and did the trade in program directly with CR. It was convenient and fast. Maybe paid a bit too much but there was value in the convenience and not having to mod the system.
