Just noticed you’re from McMinnville. A very close friend of mine was from there, and moved back a few years ago. I lost touch after a couple of years. Miss the hell out of him.

Great post by the way. So I’m wondering wouldn’t a water softening system such as the Fleck do the same thing your doing? Since I’ve got really hard water here in my area. I’ve been looking at softener systems for my home. The Fleck system is one such item I’m considering. Or do I need to consider the item your using additionally?

Probably. He moved back there 9-10 years ago. I worked with him for about a decade before he retired and went back home. That’s cool that your mom knew Dottie. Everett had some awesome stories from back in the day. I loved hearing him talk about hanging out with all those old country stars.

The best one was Dottie being pissed at Willie Nelson back in the eighties I think. They were at her house, and Willie asked Everette to drive him to the store to get cigarettes or something. They ended up staying gone for two weeks without telling anyone where they were.

@JohnLakeman recommends the Fleck unit. Adding a whole home water softener has been on my list for quite a while, but I haven’t done it yet.

One thing I’m not sure of, is if it softens the water to the point where you don’t have to dry at all. With the CR Spotless or DI Rinse kits, you can get spot free air drying. I only dry mine now if I’m adding a sealant or wax when I’m done. Not sure if a regular water softener filters it that much. You may still need to dry your truck, since even water that’s not hard will leave spots. He may know for sure.

I do know that most of the time a home water softening system doesn’t get hooked up to the outside faucets, since it’s a waste to water the yard with it. Maybe there’s a bypass that could be used just for washing vehicles?

I have not actually tested the hardness out of the softener, and it will vary depending on where you are in the resin life. I'll watch the softener, and test a sample immediately after regeneration; something I should know anyway.

As the resin approaches the need for regeneration, the hardness of my water will begin to increase very slightly. The increased hardness is not enough to taste, but you can observe a very slight reduction in "sudsiness" in the shower. How quickly this happens depends on the trade-offs made between the media bed size you selected, and the frequency of regeneration, all of which plays into how much salt and how much water is used for regeneration. For me, this occurs at about Day 6 or Day 7 of a forced seven day regeneration cycle, so Fleck's recommended size and cycle works well for my family. The Fleck will also regenerate on volume sooner than the seven days if I use more water than normal.

When I wash my vehicles, I have no shade, so I never let them air dry. In fact, until recently, I never used my softened water faucet. I quickly wipe my cars mostly dry with a synthetic chamois then mirco-fiber towel the residue, working the panels that are getting the most sun first, and paying particular attention to the glass because I have gotten water spots on the glass using hard wash water.

In the future, the thing to do would be to use my softened water faucet, and set up my regeneration cycle so that it normally regenerates on Friday night (Saturday 2 am). Then, plan to wash the cars on Saturday morning.

    Not many yet, mostly stock.

I agree coming from a water quality job and currantly in one. You can set up a rental agreement
With a few different company's that can supply you with a mix bed tank for about $150 bucks per tank and monthly fee of 15-20 $ per tank (3.61 cubic feet tanks) you'll need a few special tank fittings then adapt to a garden hose and have total spot free rinse. The smaller "big blue" cartridges will exhaust quickly. 3.61 tank is about 4 1/2 ft tall and 24 inches round foot print.
No softener tank needed just De-Ionized water for spot free rinse. My guess is about $400 a year from Colligan water, or a distriburator like that. you can use your whole house system as I do through the hose bib I installed to a DI tank. .... Just an idea.

Hello everyone, hope everyone had a good holiday. After reading up on this thread, I wanted to share another option as well. If you have some handiness and your up to the task. You could build yourself a version of the system Jason has described earlier in the post.

After reviewing what he was using and using Google. This is what I ended using in my garage. Below I have a list of parts of what I used. This can be sourced pretty much anywhere. Piping I used what was convenient for me and that was copper. You can use PVC as well, just use what you’re comfortable with.

After getting this completed, I would say I have probably around $375.00 invested in it so far.

Hopefully this will help anyone looking to do the same.

    So, for items used,

3pcs. Pentek Big Blue 20 oz. Filters
I use (1) for a sediment filtration, and (2) for the resin filtration.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014C3IOS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2pcs. Refillable water filter cartridge, 20 oz.
I bought these for the resin mediahttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GIHSECE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    1pc. sediment filter 5 micron https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZOZ85L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

1pc Dual TDS monitor (Measuring water coming in and out of system)https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EHAZGW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s04?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2 bags, DI mixed bed resin, one 5lb bag will fill a refillable filter container.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MPCN68G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2pcs. Male adaptors ¼” x ½” nptf. You will need two of these to attach the probes from the TDS monitor. You can pick this up from Home Depot (Product #PP010824WD)

Below are some pics of the completed system and what the resin media looks like in the filter.

    Working on it :-)
I was at 0 for almost a year, went from 3 and now to 8 on my last wash and I am still spot free. I thought they said replace when it hits 20. Just went back and read the FAQ and its says you can have spots or surface damage above 0. Looks like I will be replacing now.
