    Morning,

Considering joining the Tundra ranks - and am looking at a 2011 5.7 4x4 with approx. 70k on the clock. Ext Cab.

I will see some towing duty - 7,300 lbs totally loaded (max).

My current 2000 Silverado (5.3 with 3.73 rears) is at 150,000 miles and feeling her age. Have put a new transmission in, cooling system...and a few other things. But with a 4 spd and 3.73 rears....in order to get the RPM in a usable range - requires either going way too fast before climbing a hill, or 2nd gear and 3500 RPM at 55 - screaming up hills....she does it. but it is a workout. I live in PA, and pull through NY, WV, VT, and a few other places with hills.

I Like the Tundra - felt more like a car ride (not that it is a bad thing) compared to the aging Chevy....

What should I be looking for to have been performed on this before purchasing...or negotiate in the price.

How is the Rear seat with human sized passengers (no football players) for extended trips of a few hours or more?

Any other things I should be looking out for? Frame issues? Cam Tower?

a 2011 with 70k miles is a Tundra that's still probably in its break in period. I bought my 2010 with 86k miles, and mine has the towing package and ive towed in the blue ridge mountains with her at 8k lbs loaded like it wasn't even an issue. The frames are coated so it shouldn't have any issues regarding rust and most likely there will be a cam tower leak but in all regards, it will be a slight slight slight leak that wont cause any noticeable different, hell you probably wont notice it in any regards. If you're in the north, check the whole component of the chassis, suspension and look for rust, mine was from about 2 years in NY and where everything the was able to be rubberized, was rubberized, the backing plates were not and basically corroded from the salt to the point where they were falling off and cost $1500 to replace them and some other parts.

As for the rear seat, its manageable. my 5'10" wife sat back there on our trip to florida with my brother and it was fine, not ideal but fine.

Just make sure its been serviced frequently and you will be fine

When you say "ext cab", are you referring to the cab with that has full sized rear doors (crew max)? Or the cab with the different sized rear doors (double cab)?

If you are meaning the crewmax then the leg room in the rear is huge. The leg room in the double cab is still pretty decent though.

As far as things to be aware of the two you mentioned i believe are the most important. Im not really to sure if there were any other major concerns.

If the truck still looks good and is at a price you are comfortable with, then definitely. 70k isnt at all a millage that would worry me for a tundra.

Will get the frame / undercarriage look at certainly. Went down to Charlottesville area with the RV...was a workout for certain.

yes, my daughter would be back there...5'10 is a reasonable sized human. not ideal, but fine enough. I can live with that.

    Appreciate the response

The 3 major problems I've had with my 2011,that currently has 65,000 miles, 1) LCA adjustment was froze so tech was unable to align the front end at 19,000 miles, 2)both cam towers started leaking at 33,000 miles, 3) power steering rack crapped out at 55,000 miles. Fortunately I had Toyota extended warranty so parts and repairs cost me nothing. Hope this helps!

Do you have a truck in mind or just looking at Tundra's in general (I'm assuming you have specific one picked out)? Do you want 4wd or is rwd fine for your needs? If you are looking at buying from a dealer then they should offer a Carfax. With it you can see quite a bit about it. First you can see where it was bought and where is spent a lot of it's life. If they had the oil changed at a dealer they often log that into the system too. By looking at the mileage you can tell how well they stayed on schedule.

70k isn't much at all, I recently replaced my 2000 Tundra with an 07 with twice that. But I specifically got a truck that had never seen the salt up north. If you plan on keeping the truck for a long time it's worth it. Some of the frames I looked at on trucks that had spent their lives up north (all brands) looked pretty bad. You could see scale that was covered by undercoating. Some have said that the dealers were sandblasting the frames but I don't think all are doing that. Other trucks looked fine. Since I was looking for a 4wd I quickly started to look at the flange for the front driveshaft on the transfer case. It's pretty easy to see. On my southern truck it (and the bolts) look brand new. On some of the trucks from up north it was rusty but nothing bad. Other trucks it looked like it spent it's life in the sea. While it's not going to fail it does tell me how difficult it would be to do repairs. Going on 8 years old it's not going to be perfect but the truck should have at least another 150k miles left in it (most likely 250k or more).

With a Tundra you pay a little in fuel mileage but you get a truck that is unlikely to need to have the transmission replaced (I had a 04 Trailblazer that didn't make it 70k before the transmission was toast, lesson learned, stick with Toyota). Unfortunately rust is the equalizer. Living in snow country I pass a number of 15 year old trucks that are nothing more than yard plow trucks (can't pass inspection) of every brand.

70K on a 2011 is nothing. check for rust underneath and cam tower leak (if small seepage it's still ok)
also if AIP repairs were done or not.

Get the vin and search toyotas website. You can find alot of info...my 07 with 52600 bought a few weeks ago had an almost complete repair history there. Obviously only works if po used toyota for maint. But warr etc repairs will be there. Good luck. As a recovering lifelong ford man who has towed way over ford recommedations multiple times with my f150 i can yell you the tundra goes, stops, steers, and rides so much better than my 5.4 supercrew did its not a comparison. The quality of interior design, durability, ease of upgrades leaves ford in the dust. 3 friends with 08 tundra 5.7s...98k, 126k, 350+k...no issues.

Yea....working on the home finances at this point....

    Hard to give up a 0 / mo payment....for a 350 - 400 / mo.

    Yea yea...put more down...pay cash...life goals.

they are looking at 24K....add in a rear camera and remote start...25 + TT

its a clean truck internal...did a paint scan, and not more than a .5 difference across +-....if a re-spray or overspray / pain...would have seen a 1+ mil difference...so it seems to be wholy intact from a paint perspective....and the front clip in the engine compartment seems to be factory welds (did notice a few new screw - so maybe the coolant system had an issue at some point) - but seems solid.

just need to work on the payment side of the equation....

    Thanks for the input

$25k are crewmax prices for that year/mileage, I’d be trying to get em closer to $20k if I were you.

Just buy one. It's a no brainer.

07 DC SR5 4x4, 5.7L 241k miles. Gobs of power, better mpg than a 5.9L Ram, more rear leg room than my GX460.

Friends have 2011 w/ 135k, and 2010 w/ 60k with no issues. You can see all the dealer service records @ toyota.com with the VIN#.

Check frame cross braces under the bed for corrosion.

Pick the price point you want, backed up with service records, these things are pretty much bulletproof.

Maybe in the older F150s but not so much in the newer ones. I had a 2014 F150 that was rear ended and totaled. I bought my father in law's 2007 Tundra and the interior in my F150 was night and day better than the Tundra.
