So had a customer bring there 2011 4Runner in said there experiencing intermittent gear shift issues
Here’s what it does and fortunately it did it for me go to put it into drive the shifter will move so the interlock switch is working but it will not actually go into drive or any gear for that matter, the indicator on the dash doesn’t light up either and if you move it through the range a few times eventually it will go into drive or reverse and the indicator will light up
Is there a switch on the shifter that goes bad ?

Have you looked underneath to see if there's a cable to the side of the transmission? Might save you from tearing into the interior...

Have you looked into seeing what the procedure is for checking fluid level?

I haven’t done anything yet they dropped it at my shop today
And I just took a quick look at it
And it’s not transmission related once it finally goes in to drive it runs fine and it’s only intermittent he said it can go months and then nothing no drive, reverse nothing just park no matter where you move shifter to and again the indicator on the dash shows P and when you move shifter it just goes black till finally after moving the shifter back and forth for a while it will work and go into gear kinda baffling

That definitely sounds like a switch or some sort of electrical issue.
