Nice. I'm still trying to figure out RG in the North East without anyone to show me the ropes.

I hunted pheasant, quail, huns and sharptail when I lived out west, but the only wild upland birds I have access to here are roughed grouse and woodcock.

I've been able to find woodcock without any help, but I've only found old tracks with no scent for RG. Maybe this year will be different.

Good luck out there. I heard Maine has good numbers as well as the Berkshires. I’ve never hunted them but from what I’ve read it’s all about the age of the forest you’re in. Look for places that have been logged 5 years ago or so. I’m sure someone in here knows better then me though.

Nice. Never been grouse hunting. Used to hunt pheasant a lot in Ohio and Iowa when I was younger though.
I’m waiting for squirrel season to open in Alabama on the 14th now.

Not a hunter or a dog person, but that looks like a good boy you've got there. Always thought hunting dogs were cool since my buddy in high school got a dog for coon hunting. His name was Rebel and was one of the smartest dogs I ever saw

Hunted Ruff Grouse a lot in WV. They like the steepest thickest crap they can find. Never far away from cover. First thing they will do when you jump them is to put a tree between you and them. It took me a little while on the places I hunted to learn their preferred areas. Once I found them they were almost always there. Weather played a factor in where I found them. Colder meant thicker cover. Fresh snow helps.

I have not hunted grouse in many years. Went a lot in my younger years. We got an American Water Spaniel puppy from good hunting stock so I’m taking him out this season. Bought a new shotgun and other necessities but wish I kept my old truck for going in the woods.

Back in the late 70's while out elk and deer hunting the grouse season ran at the same time, I used a Ruger .22 pistol, 6" barrel with fixed sights which was very accurate and I killed a lot of grouse with neck shots. Grouse are funny, almost every time I've seen them they move around the back side of trees like they think you won't see them, so most of the time my shots were no more than 50' away. Many times I've had my heart up in my throat because they blend so well into the surroundings that I have almost stepped on them before they fly away. Not much meat on them but they do taste good.
