My hood thinks its a damn snake. The molting is happening quick. Really hate this.

That does stink. It is 12 yrs old, have seen much worse. The elements in our area are finally winning. Maybe if just the hood, have it repainted for a few Hundred bucks.

May not cost too much. Looks like it’s just the clear coat.

That's a great looking truck. Sorry about your luck. Let us know what the shop says about the fix.

Texas is a tough environment for automotive paint. If you park outside, which is pretty much required if you work, good wax/sealant protection is necessary.

That's not the total issue in your case. The flaking pattern looks like something was splashed on the hood between the color and clear coats, and the clear didn't bond to the color in the splash pattern.

I left a freshly painted vehicle in the Texas sun without wax protection for several years due to absent-mindedness (lost interest, lot going on). The result was dulling, not shedding, and the dullness buffed out to spectacular shine (2 coats PPG quality clear).

BTW, I'm not a blue guy, but that IS a nice looking truck.

$1200 at the local toyota collision center. Ouch. Estimator said the same thing about bonding.

I might try a rattle can clear to see if i can save it...nothing to lose.

The Texas sun will fry paint in a hurry, bonding issue or not...kinda sux lookin at that hood as i drive but at least its not on other surfaces

I’ve always wondered if it was possible for them to lsand and feather the clearcoat failure areas. Scuff the entire hood, then re-clear the hood.

Don't screw around with spray cans because that won't bond either; waste of prep time. Bite the bullet and get it painted professionally. Except for that little hickey, your paint looks great, and will look great for a long time.

Get three bids from independent shops. Disqualify any flyers, either high or low. Pick the low bid out of those that remain. They'll beat the heck out of Toyota's estimate.

I've never tried it, but have always been told that it will not stick. I've been tempted a time or two. Maybe it has to do with the uniformity of color appearance after. Color base coat is perfectly dull; not sure how scuffed raw color coat looks after top coating.

Clear has to be applied within a certain time window after the color coat is applied. No prep is necessary because, if the color is not fully cured, the clear bonds to the color through chemical molecule cross-linking. Mechanical bonding is by comparison weaker and un-necessary.

Makes sense. I didn’t know if maybe they had some type of adhesion promoter similar to what they use if you’re painting plastic etc. But I guess if you’re going as far as re-spraying it with clear, might as well do a repaint. I always just figured They painted over it clear with the new paint. So why not just re-clear.

A matte black hood overlay on just the top surface could look pretty cool!

I'm starting to not hate the fact that my truck never had a clear coat. Single stage paint job from the factory.

That truck is really nice. I'd have the hood repainted and start waxing the rest more often.

Ill go talk to some local independents next week. Toyora wanted to blend fenders, r/i bumpers lights etc for 1200. Still might try to rattle can clear it, nothing to lose, has to be painted... Also thinking about the black mr hood scoop and a black matte but not on all of it. Might find a cheap craigslist hood and play with it some, try to spray myself. For 1200 i can buy eastwoods paint delivery system, guns, and paint...will see

Feel your pain, my 2007 has dulling on the roof. I keep it waxed and park it under a tree that keeps shade from about 8am to 3-4PM

BTW what wheels are those? Sharp looking truck.

My ‘07 Tundra is being repainted and clear coated as I write this. Originally repaired/repainted in 2010 due to an accident.
