Was torn between posting here or in general. If this is not considered detailing I do apologize.

So I'm looking to paint my chrome bumper caps here in the near future and I'm looking for some advice.

I know many folks use plasti-dip and it seems to adhere well. I've also been told that adding some bedliner over the plasti-dip helps extend its life. My plan had been to use the plasti-dip, bedliner, then primer, followed by color matched paint, with automotive clear to finish it off.

I then cam across this product from Duplicolor and I'm intrigued if this could be used to get my adhesion to the chrome and also be the basecoat for my color match. Essentially cutting down from 3 different layers of paint to 1.
    https://www.duplicolor.com/product/metalcast-anodized-automotive-paint/

Has anyone used this product or have thoughts?

My color match is blue and I've seen this duplicolor in blue so it could be my base coat. If I do the plasti-dip to bedliner, most rattle can bedliner is black so I'll need a primer coat to make my blue color match work.

Edit: title changed from chrome bumper cap to bulge/surround since my goals/process have changed lol

I just used self etching primer then black rust oleum then clear and it’s held up well. Just has one chip and it touched up easy. I’d imagine sanding the chrome first would be best. Here’s the back, did front as well.
From what I’ve seen @BlueRibbon4x4 is the painting guru around here. Maybe he could give some advice. DA304697-8AF9-4395-A0E7-CAD2AE9E56A0.jpg

@Barrett50 thanks. Most of what I've seen says the self etching primer is iffy with the chrome. Glad yours is holding up. I've talked with BlueRibbon a bunch on this topic. He did the plasti-dip followed by bedliner and its held up for a few years.

Agree the primer is iffy, the chip I got took the primer too, down to chrome. I’m guessing if I had sanded it that wouldn’t have been the case. Plastidip does seem like it would be a good primer if you put it on thin.

Well.... taking a gamble. Bought the metalcast ground coat off Amazon and might give this a whirl on a spare hood bulge I have. If it comes out decent I'll throw it on the truck to see how it holds up. If it looks promising, the rest of the chrome will get this treatment. Pictures will follow as the project progresses

So first lesson I learned. Since I'm painting over chrome, I do not need their ground coat. Bouht 4 cans off Amazon, whoops at least they were cheap.
Used the blue metalcast and sprayed the hood bulge and surround. I used 2 cans between both parts. Results seem good and if it wasn't raining I'd be painting with my color match paint today.

Well... this seems to have worked. I just am noob with an actual spray gun so I'll have to wet sand more than I should be. But the paint is adhered and the color looks good. Sprayed both the bulge and surround but its easier to rest the bulge on the truck for a quick photo. After these get cleaned up, I'll install them and post more. Then its the waiting game to see how they hold up.

Hit those with more clear before you wet sand. If you're sanding and see blue it's too late. You can smooth the clearcoat with sandpaper (1000-2000) then buff and wax for shine. That's easier said then done......

I have enough clear on it. When I realized I was going to need to wet sand, I added more clear. Have painted and repainted parts due to over sanding so I know what you mean. Borrowed a coworkers spray gun and I obviously have room to improve when using one hahaha
Hoping the end result looks decent. If not, I start again...

And as expected. I am not happy with the result with just wet sanding. So going to sand the clear off and paint again. Will update at a later date with 2nd attempt after spraying correctly

I'm right there with you. I color matched my chrome grill surround and it just didn't shine up. I need to get motivated to re-do the job. It just looks like a flat blue......

@Bikeric yeah, my color looks pretty close but my clear coat didn't go down smooth (my fault, I wasn't spraying enough...) and holding it the vehicle I wasn't thrilled. Thankfully I am using a second set so my vehicle isn't affected while I'm messing with painting.
Look forward to seeing your updated result

Soo.... I got everything sanded back down and ready to paint. Not wanting to waste paint and time sanding, I spent more time trying to dial in the spray gun. After 30 minutes and still getting the "textured" look instead of smooth. I gave up and called it a day.
Today I swung by the paint shop I use to find out if I have bad paint or user error. Turns out my air compressor set up isn't sending enough air thru the gun to provide adequate spray, even though I had enough pressure. They took the paint I brought un and sprayed it using their set up to show it laying down smooth. So now I'm going to coordinate with a coworker who has a different set up and has used his for painting with good results.

Okay. This got put on the back burner. Had to figure out a different setup for equipment to paint with. I'm now using the paint gun from Harbor Freight and painted my crash bar yesterday. With having the Blitz bumper, I no longer have a crash bar installed. It painted pretty good. Have some minor orange peel but not enough to hold me off. Hopefully will get the blue sprayed tomorrow and will have better pics to add soon.

So 3rd attempt at painting. Went much better. Color looks good and the paint went down pretty smooth. Once the clear has cured. I'll wet sand and hit it with 1 more layer of clear. This should smooth out the slight orange peel I have.

Sanded out the orange peel and just sprayed them again with clear. Definitely looks better.

Great Job!! My elbows hurt just thinking about how much you wet sanded on these.... They're going to look great on the truck.

    Got the parts installed!!!!
Are they perfect, no. But I hear buy thru Toyota doesn't always guarantee a match. Also possible that if I did this again it would look better since I know have more experience painting.

Am I happy, 1000%!!!! This looks so much better than the chrome. I'm giddy like a school girl (I just got everything installed). It is 30s and raining so I wasn't able to paint the bumper ends black, but that is coming soon.

Only been a month but we've had some crazy weather. Truck is outside 99% of the time so it sees everything. No major hail but have had 2 different hail storms come thru and multiple rain storms. So far, the paint is holding and I've had no issues with it.
Here is a what my security camera captured during one of the hail storms.

I painted my chrome bumper caps, color matched army green. I did some experimenting at first with primers. Self etching will NOT work on super cleaned chrome. I sprayed it, and the next day with effort, could take some of it off with my finger nail. I then did it the right way, stripped the chrome off, sandblasting and sanding. Its 9 months later, through winter, and perfect.

I'd give it a 95%. I have a few rock chips (2 in the bulge and 1 on the surround) but I also have taken rock chips to pieces I haven't painted, so I don't really think its on my paint. I give it a 95% because it could be better, is that due to my inexperience or the process. Hard to say. For about 150 in material I have no real complaints or regrets.
Its been over a year and the truck has been outside and these parts so an extremely hot Texas summer (averaged 103 for 3 months with no rain) and then multiple winter storms which included negative temps and being costed in ice.

Here is a pic from January 2023
