I'm sure it is very difficult. I am a military kid (dad served 31yrs in the Marines) and have 2 kids who have both parents in the military. Talking with my oldest (10) she says she is very proud of having military parents but it is hard when we are both gone at the same time. I can only imagine.

Luckily my mom stayed home and raised me, but the hardest part was moving every 2-3 years and having to go to a new school and make new friends...

The period of about 2000 through 2005 (middle school and the first half of high school) was the worst for me...

However, being a military kid has given me opportunities that very few civilian kids get...

Because when one has Asperger's, social skills are not a strong point and as a result, making friends isn't easy. We lived in Pennsylvania, the first time anyway, from 1990 until 1996. I made a few friends, but then we moved. When we lived in California from 1996 to 1998, I had two or three true friends.

As for schools, the curriculum varies from district to district and even more from state to state. Some schools districts are much better than others, and as a result, I might be further behind in one state than I was in another state. The worst school district where I was enrolled, at least in my opinion, was Island County on Whidbey Island (in Washington). There were a few teachers there who were GREAT, but the school system as a whole sucked. The fact that I'd just started middle school when we moved there didn't help...

Another annoying thing about moving is the state/standardized tests. I was forced to take standardized tests in three different states!

FYI, I always excelled in English/Literature. History/Social Studies was probably a close second. I did okay in science, and I was horrible at math. I did well enough in 4th and 5th grade (at the same school in Virginia Beach) that I ended up on the honor roll the entire time I was there. Believe it or not, I actually ended up in a 10th grade English class in 11th grade not because I wasn't good, but because we moved from Northern Virginia back to Pennsylvania between 10th and 11th grade. Fairfax County Public Schools covered the same thing in 10th grade that Central Bucks School District covered in 11th grade. It wasn't a matter of being good or not good; It was a matter of "I already learned this shit last year so why should I have to sit through it again?" They were happy to put me in the 10th grade class, and even though all of my classmates were roughly a year younger than me, they understood...

Nothing truly horrible happened to me between starting kindergarten and graduating from high school, but I was bullied a lot starting in 6th grade, and only when I started 11th grade did it really start to die down...

I was not this friendless loser, but making friends was difficult for me, and that's why moving was so difficult for me...

This is not technically a Tundra, but it is pretty much based on one, so here you go!

awe! That makes sense. I know very little about Asperger's.

Kids can be horrible and cruel. I go out of my way to teach my girls that people are different for many different reasons and that nobody should be treated differently. I have some friends who think I'm weird because if my girls ask me about someone in the store that is different (wheel chair, missing limb, service dog, etc) I encourage my girls to talk to them after I talk to my girls about it so they have some understanding. My oldest wants to work with me on getting a dog rescue used to help disabled vets (loss of limb, ptsd, etc) up and running. She has a big heart and tries to see good in everyone. I don't want my kids to be bullies.

I would rather have no friends than fake ones. I don't think people are losers because they have no friends or very few. You seem cool to me!

I was just at a "March for the 22" event this past Sunday, right in front of my work. The National Guard brought a Stryker, a Humvee, and a large truck out...

I don't have a huge entourage, but I have plenty of friends, including some I met at a nonprofit for young adults with Asperger's back in 2009. There are five of us including myself, and 4 out of the 5, myself included, have driver's licenses and vehicles. 4 out of 5 of us have steady jobs (believe it or not, NOT the one with no driver's license).

After my one friend John who also has Asperger's, my best friend in the world who isn't a blood relative would have to be my boss. Yes, my boss!

If taken care of they do. When I was deployed the AC in ours worked EXTREMELY well. But I had friends in motor pool who hooked me up and kept it going strong! And it was up-armored

My uncle (by marriage; married to my mom's older sister) was in the Army for 26 years, retired as a Sergeant Major. He went to Wes Point right out of high school and was active duty until the late eighties or so. None of the Hummers he rode in had A/C, and he was in Desert Storm!

@4x4_Angel and anyone else who's interested...

Here are some pictures of me driving a 1971 VW Bus owned by my uncle (not the same Uncle who was in Desert Storm, but also an Army vet; specifically a helicopter pilot). This was during a family reunion in California a couple weeks ago. Yes, I am under 30 and I actually do know how to drive stick!

    Sure!

Couldn't help but notice you're in the Navy (or were; are you retired?). My dad joined the Navy right out of college in 1982, and retired in 2007 as a Captain. He currently works for a defense contractor.

As the son of a 25-year Navy vet, I'd like to thank you for your service!

Yes, in case you couldn't tell by my avatar, I do have a bit of a thing for Rolls-Royce motorcars!

Fun fact: Volkswagen has owned Bentley since 1998 (along with the rights to produce the Rolls-Royce V8 engine), and BMW has owned Rolls-Royce (the name, the "flying lady" ornament, the grille) since roughly the same time. Any so-called "Rolls-Royce" produced from 2003 onward is just a BMW in drag, in my opinion. Their entire lineup is powered by a variant of the V-12 engine found in the BMW 7-series...

These are some examples of true Rolls-Royces...

(No, I didn't take these pictures)
