    Hey everybody! Greetings from SC.
I have a 2018 Tundra with almost 50k miles on it. I've been taking it to the dealership for oil changes and they've been putting 0w20 Mobil 1 synthetic in it. I'm going to start back changing my own oil and I want to change to 5w30 Mobil 1 synthetic back in it.. The dealership says that it could "void" the warranty if I have an oil related engine failure due to running a heavier viscosity; which I've never heard of happening with good synthetic oil. Any thoughts on switching to 5w30?..... Thanks!

First in on a oil thread! Why do you want to switch?

I want to change to 5w30 because I live in the Southeast where we have more of a warm/ hot climate the majority of the year. I feel like 0w20 is too thin and more of a break in type viscosity.. Plus I have a 99 F-150 that had 12k on it when I bought it in 2000; it now has almost 267k on it and still running like a top. I attribute it's longevity to using 5w30 Castrol or Mobile 1 synthetic motor oil every 5000-7000 miles..

I switched to 5w-30 at 50k with no ill effects. Engine sounds smother/quieter. Do you have an extended warranty? If not, it’s about up anyhow.

Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! I live on the Alabama gulf coast. My wife's Highlander has been using 0W20 for over 250k miles and still runs like a top. From the 2018 manual:

Toyota dealerships use 5w30 in Mexico for all the UR and GR engines... And it's the only option offered

Check your manual and it will show you which oil to use for the temp range you drive in. Honestly I think you’re perfectly safe with either. It’s not going to cause some catastrophic failure.
