    Howdy!

How many miles before you change your oil?

The Toyota dealership I got my truck from is telling me I should be changing the 0W20 Full Synthetic(that Toyota recommends?) every 10k miles??

I have always known Full Synthetic to be changed at 5k miles(90% of the vehicles I've owned have been BMW) , but he assured me I'm good till 10k. Thoughts?

    Thanks.

Lots of threads like these around here. You will be fine at 10K quite a few here even go longer because they get their oil tested at Blackstone and find that the oil is GTG. I don’t put a ton of miles on my truck so I change my at 5K or basically once a year. Even if I did put on more miles I probably still do it at 5K unless it was all highway. You’re going to find quite a few different opinions. Now you have mine LOL.

I used to change my BMW at 9k. The BMW techs on the forums always said the microflourocarbons, or whatever the hell they were called, peaked after 3000 miles and the oil was better between 3000-5000 than it was between 1-3000 miles. The techs would take the oil out of the BMWs when the old ladies would come in at 3000 miles and put it in their car. I also had a sticking lifter when I sold it at 120k so take that for what it’s worth. I tend to change my oil based on color now.

Yep, I'm up to 5 K on mine since I bought it and got a maintenance light. I may go ahead and change it with full syn before resetting the light and then go 10K next round since I'm not sure what oil the dealership used. The light comes on every 5K after a reset.

You’d be fine at the recommended intervals. But if it makes you feel better you can do it sooner. I always pick the latter LOL

I figure 5k would probably still be good. Can get tires rotated at the same time each time and kill 2 birds with the same stone. =)

I do the same with rotating the tires and getting the oil changed every 5K miles. Oil changed every 5K miles may be iverkill but that's fine with me. Is cheap maintenance in my opinion.

I'll have to check what the severe service schedule is when I get my truck but I'm thinking I'll probably do 5000 mile (8000 km) intervals. I've been talking to guys who run their engines for hundreds of thousands of miles and they usually recommend that interval or the manufacturer's severe service schedule, whichever is shorter.

The factory interval on my BMW is annual or 10k :monocle:

I do 5k but I have a Flex which specifies it (probably for no good reason if you're using regular gas/E10 all the time)

The recommended 10K intervals were good enough for the million mile Tundra. I suppose if you’re aiming for 2 Million you could change it out at 9500 miles or every 12 months and still be okay.

The dealership that did my Toyota Care (not where I purchased it) on my 2017 Tundra did the change every 5,000 miles. I was a bit confused as I thought everyone said dealerships were doing it every 10,000 miles but that's what they did. I have continued changing it every 5,000 miles using Mobil 1. I tow a travel trailer so I think I fall under the severe service schedule. If you look at the criteria for severe service, almost everybody falls under it. Also have a 2017 Camry and am letting that go 10,000 miles between changes (again, same as the dealership did under Toyota Care) using Mobil 1. I put a lot more miles on that car so the time between changes is about the same - am using OEM oil filters on both.

I was told everybody falls under the severe service schedule. Admittedly, the guy who told me that is pretty conservative but he was also able to get half a million miles out of a Ford engine.

I actually know a guy I work with at Toyota that never changed the oil in his Taco. And he was/is a gear head. He told me he sold it a few weeks before and said man you should have told me. That's when he told me nah you wouldn't want it. Forgot the age but it wasn't a spring chicken.

I had a G37 and put 235K on it before selling and would bet the engine will never wear out before something else becomes a big ticket item. I would also bet it saw a couple of 13K+ oil changes but none under 10K. Nissan really didn't want those engines past 7.5K even with synthetic. But these were highway miles. I have believed in Mobil 1 for the last 25 years and don't flinch at running it 10K.

The FFV 5,000 mile owner's manual oil change interval is driven by Toyota's management of their warranty. A massive huge risk for Toyota when they sell a new vehicle. So they must assume that the FFV owner WILL run E85----because they have told you, the purchaser of the FFV, that you CAN RUN E85.

Don't run E85??? Then you're good for 10,000 mile intervals on the engine oil. I have an FFV. I change at 10,000 miles. I've had 3 Blackstone Labs reports in my first 4 oil changes. All good and the last two reports Blackstone suggested going to 12/13,000 mile intervals. The oil continues to be gold in color at 6,000 miles.

And now a word from my lawyer: YMMV!!!!

With conventional oil I always completed 3,000 miles intervals. My 2019 calls for 10,000 mile intervals with 0W20. My truck, my rules. I do my own oil changes and complete them at 7,500 miles using an OEM oil filter and Mobil 1 0w20 extended performance. It’s where I feel comfortable. You need to decide what you feel comfortable with. Don’t rely on folks from a forum.

I always do the 5’s as it is easy to remember (oil, filter, tires). I also do my first change around 500miles to get the metal particles out. It’s amazing to shine a light through that 500mile oil (old school I know but it’s my truck).

I’m going back 40 plus years, before mobile one even made oil filters. The oil was advertised as being good for 25,000 miles between oil changes. They didn’t say anything about annual oil change. They did say every 3000 miles take off the old filter and install a new one and top off the oil. Then To cover their a** they said follow you car’s manufacture recommendations because people would not change the filter.
