I'm going to keep this brief. I have a differential hoist the I would like to hook up as needed in my garage for loads below 1/2ton probably more in the 200-300lb range. I have an approximately 6x20 laminated beam spanning 8ft sitting on wood/concrete piers/supports. This is also used to hold up the roof and part of the second story of the house.

    Questions are:
    1. should I even mess with the beam
    2. what is the best way (hardware options) to add a loop to the beam to hang the hoist?

Need an engineer for this, I wouldn’t touch it with a 10’ pole…gluelam beam carry a lot of load. Any modifications need an engineer stamp

For a couple hundred lbs, I'd mount some double strut to it and get a strut trolly for your hoist. Should work just fine.

hmm, I like that Idea. I figure if it built to handle a waterbed in the bedroom above it, it could handle a few hundred pounds. I may sister a couple of uprights to it as well. Thanks.
