    Hi all,

I have a 2014 SR5 that had an attempted catalytic converter theft. According to the repair shop, either they were rookies that didnt know what they were doing or their blades were dull - so they didnt get it off but they don't think they can weld it back together.

Anyways, they quoted me about 1K for aftermarket parts and labor - but I am reading some threads that the OEM is the only way to do.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance

Can you expand your thoughts on taking it to a different shop?

They attempted to make multiple cuts - but were unsuccessful. The repair shop said they didnt think they could do enough of a good job of welding it to have it not fail later but they could try. They thought replacement would be a better choice.

Coworker got his replaced with aftermarket at a muffler shop plus added a Flowmaster ($1200), Toyota said it would be a 4-5 month wait on oem.
The next day he got his cats stolen again at the grocery store.

Yeah, I am looking at the cover plates now for added protection.

Two days after mine got stolen, a news article showed that they busted a large operation in the area - the van that they pulled over in a traffic stop had over 200 CC in the back - they found more in their three storage units plus $180k in cash.

Yes, those are what I am looking at. If it gives some peace of mind, that will be worth it. Any experience with aftermarket issues with the Cat replacement or do I pony up for the OEM?

    What part of Houston?

I just moved here and looking for a Tundra pretty soon. It seems to be a favorite among cat thieves (they will probably like my Tacoma as well).

Coworker lives in Cypress 290 area but I'm in the South East side of town and 2 Tundras got hit at the movie theater I take my boys. I got the Valhalla Shield and feel comfortable going anywhere with the 1/4" aluminum skid plate and security bolts. But they do stock the Desert Eagle off road plate at Don McGill Toyota in Katy.

Several have reported not being able to clear codes with aftermarket cats.

Not sure what that's about, but do you feel lucky?

If the internals of your damaged cats are fine I would find someone to repair the housing or piping and slap them back on before changing out to aftermarket cats.

nothing against Pasadena but Clear Lake and Friendswood will hold home values and better school districts.

If anyone is looking for a Catalytic Converter Shield in Houston Area, they have them in stock at Autonation Toyota Gulf Freeway parts department.

I think he said $500 and I'm not sure if its for front or front/back. Call the parts department, I saw them there Saturday when I got my oil plug gasket. These things should come standard on our trucks.

I received my 2014 used truck shipped from out of state with new aftermarket cats to replace the OEM that were stolen. CEL immediately after first run. OEM or nothing but be prepared, I was quoted 4500 for bank 1 and 2 on both sides.
