    Hi all,

Unfortunately I lost both of my cats this summer/fall and now my house is empty and too quiet. I loved my cats, but after dealing with litter box issues (the female consistently pooped outside of it, and occasionally peed outside of it) and just the bad smell, no matter how often I cleaned it, I am very hesitant to get another cat.

Anyone tried litter that doesn't have a terrible pee/litter smell all the time? Does anyone have experience with the newer pine pellet litter? I scooped them at least 1-2 times everyday.

Sorry I know this is kind of a gross topic, but I just want to know if there are less stinky possibilities, or if I should just keep a cat free household and enjoy the fresh air and less work! I would love a dog, but unfortunately I work 12 and 24 hour shifts, so it's a no go, as I don't want to have to worry about finding a dog sitter etc.

    Thanks for any info!

I have three cats in a tiny apartment, and they have two boxes that I clean out at least once a day. I also feed them quality food, and this helps reduce odors.

What do you feed them? I fed mine Authority for a long time, but then they started vomiting quite a bit, so I switched to Market Basket brand (a local grocery chain) because it was the only food for a wile that they would keep in them. Unfortunately I think it might be what lead to the demise of my last cat, or at least played a part...

I have three cats with no smell at all.

Then again, they are all outside barn cats:D, have a pretty good diet of mice, pocket gophers, rabbits, and some cat food when lazy.

We just recently started making our own dog food, and this will most likely happen with our cats. I already seen a reduced itching with my dog, more energy (not that he needed anymore), and has more consistent stools.

Mostly Iams indoor cat dry food with a little Hills Science diet dry food for urinary tract health, and 1/12th of a small can of wet Purina grain free wild salmon. No people food - no treats, and I feed them in the morning & evening leaving the small bowls of remaining dry food out so they can nibble during the day.

No vomiting or hairballs, and they aren't over weight.

    Sorry for your loss :(
I don't think any litter will eliminate smells 100%, cat waste is crazy strong smelling... but you knew that :p. Clean it often (like 2-3x times a week) and keep it close to a window.

Big or multiple litter boxes seem to help as they don't pee over the old or shuffle old stuff to the surface. Raw feed will also decrease their waste smell significantly, carbs makes it stink.

Thanks for the link. Personally, the highly processed foods we give ourselves (human and animal) just can’t be good for us.

If you are the type of person that flushes your one toilet 2 or 3 times a week, then I bet your house stinks... clean cat boxes daily or even twice a day - whatever it takes to reduce odors.

Umm, I am a very clean person and flush my toilet every time it's used. I cleaned those boxes 1-2 times a day, and they still stunk!

That's great! Try the litter I suggested and the food being suggested, and let us know how it works out.

I've had indoor cats for 50 yrs I have never had one spray, piss or crap anywhere except the box with one exception. He started using the bathtub all of a sudden. Turned out it was because the clean box was too dirty for him. Started cleaning it twice a day and he started using it again.

This is the best litter we've ever used.

The Snowshoe that I rescued a couple years ago is the sole 'domestic' breed in my house, he will sound off vocally if either of the two former feral females fail to cover their droppings to his satisfaction and when he thinks it's time for me to clean a box.

We have two "special needs" cats with litter box issues. These are extra deep boxes to keep them contained when they're on the throne. They cost extra but might be worth it.
Someone in animal rescue suggested using vegetable oil in the bottom to help make cleanup easier ~ it works !
We typically clean them out once a month or so and the kitties seem to appreciate this particular type of litter.

Here's buddy ~ he's got to be the first one to use the box even before I move it into the house.

I like the purple bag from Costco. Here is a screen shot. Way cheaper to buy in store.

    Thank you everyone!

I will be waiting until spring to decide whether or not to add a new feline to my home, as I want to give myself time to mourn the loss of my two babies, and to make sure I really want another one.

    Appreciate all the advice!

I would second the choice of “World’s Best Cat Litter.” I use the lavender scented multi-cat formula for my two retards.

General formula is one box per cat, scoop daily, dump/wash/replace monthly.

One had horrible gas and diarrhea while a kitten, and the only thing that fixed that was a grain-free dry food. Subscribed to Blue Buffalo Wilderness indoor.

My sister had a cat in college, that was soooooo gassy. He would go into the other girls rooms, sit on their bed, watch them, fart, then leave. He moved to my moms house; the gas went away, we chalked it up to the water haha. He was sooo stinky!!!

We use Arm and Hammer Multicat. No odor, and we only scoop it once a week.

I suggest you to use bamboo charcoal bags.
I have a very cute little cat,but I have been very troubled by the pet odor.
Since I bought some bamboo charcoal air purifying bags from https://amz.fun/jG4N8,these charcoal bags help me remove pet odor a lot.
Also, they are kind to pets and children and do no harm to us.
