The stock head unit on my 2018 Tundra does not have CarPlay.

if I get one of these adapters will I have CarPlay or do I have to replace my head unit?

Those adapters are simply for being able to use wired CarPlay wirelessly. They do make an adapter that allows you to add CarPlay to a stock head unit but the reviews are really hit or miss. I have a 2019 and just mounted a tablet on the dash instead.

these are the type you would need to add CarPlay to a 2018

100% for replacing! The stock HU will serve you better broken up with an axe and thrown into a burn barrel. IMG_1528.jpg

Not at all. Maybe like 2 seconds max if that once you start your truck.

Stock at the moment. Came with aftermarket 20's on winter tires.
I like the AJT design dash and center console trim.
Did you paint the silver plastic dash trim beside the HVAC/stereo black?

I love my truck, and Toyota did so many things right... The craptastic head unit is not one of those things.

If you add carplay to it you'll have a shitty HU with carplay.

Any money you spend on adapters could go towards a new HU with carplay that will be less glitchy, have more and better features, and noticeably improve your sound quality.

You don't have to go big and crazy, but I recommend it. Buy once, cry once.

These alternative Head Units are great ideas.

Are there links to these alternative Head Unit examples?

    Thanks!

I did indeed. I tore the truck apart to run new upsized speaker wire to all drivers. I added a front camera too. While I had the dash apart, I painted everything black using SEM paint and products. I put sound shield on the inner and outer door skins of all four doors, the firewall, back wall and under the headliner. I’m an audiophile and like great sound. Just in materials, I’ve got about 9K into my stereo. Worth every penny to me.

The one I posted above is a Kenwood DMX1057XR and I'm super happy with it.

I added front camera and I had the professionals do my install. I spent more than I should have, but the sting of that is long gone and it's pretty freakin' awesome.

There's quite a few members on here with the same unit, search Kenwood DMX1057XR and you'll find a number of threads.

There's a member on here with what looks like a great deal on a Pioneer package deal, Maestro (You need this interface to retain steering wheel controls, etc.) harness, dash kit, everything.

That's nuts, but hey if it floats your boat lol.
I found the factory JBL sufficient for my ears.
I'm contemplating on adding the machine which gives the factory deck android auto. Or go with a new head unit. Either daisata for a clean look or thinking about the cartrim home C12. I think it's the same head unit from the 3rd gen tundras. Only downfall to the C12 unit is it changes your center vents. And I just received my AJT vent trims...
    1st world problems....

Just be careful with after market units and having the JBL, in my experience aftermarket units don’t play nice with stock amps and subs. I’m completely satisfied with the stock unit in the platinum as well, adding the CarPlay system would be cool but pretty pricey and I currently have a tablet mounted on the dash instead

Good to know! I'm leaning towards the C12 unit or adding the carplay converter. $1200 vs $300... I kinda want a bigger screen lol.
My buddy did that with his blackberry tablet in his 2nd Gen TL. Velcroed it over his stock unit. Looked clean at night haha.

My 2021 built in OEM HU CarPlay unit works great and is nicely integrated from a design perspective. Added a stable USB CarPlay wireless adapter and I am set. My investment was $70 for the CarPlay dongle, and that's it. As far as sound goes I am not big into that, I always do audiobooks or podcasts. So I don't care what the music sounds like
