I mean I get where they are going with there review and on paper our Tundras fall short as Toyota has let them wither on the vine for to long now. But those who own a Tundra love it for what its not and how basic it is, its the only v8 truck on the market that is still a true v8 w/o any gimmicks like cylinder deactivation and start stop for example.

I'll take my Tundra over any of those other trucks any day of the week. The power of the ecoboost engines is impressive, but seems to be all or nothing and no way would they outlast my Tundra's V8.

Had quite a few Rams and F-150s and read all the reviews and sometimes negative press. Guess what, still bought a new Tundra and absolutely love the truck.

I get where they are coming from but newer and "more" isn't always better.

Let's see - Chevy - 900+ pages of "shaking" on the Chevy forums on ONE thread. I have also read numerous complaints about how terrible the 8-speed transmission is with lots of shuttering near low speeds as well as gear hunting.

Dodge Ram - I have read, and know several people, with ECM issues as well as transmission issues over the years. My friend had his 2017 shut down on him twice while on the highway. BAM, all lights out and the truck coasted to the side of the road from 80mph and had to be towed twice. The other time he was able to limp it in. He traded it for a new Highlander. They never did figure out what caused it after reprogramming once and replacing the ECM twice.

Ford - Well, here's a comment from the Ford forums on a new '18.

    "Mine is 2018 Lariat 4x4 3.5 Eco Loaded - 2600 miles.
Multiple scratches on the (cheapest ever) plastic interior pieces from factory.
    Scratch on center stack controls.
Loose trim piece on rear door (literally fell off while driving).
Air leak in cabin (passenger side) at highway speeds.
I love the way it drives, and mechanically no issues, but the interior and fit/finish is just crap for a 60k+ sticker vehicle."

I've also read numerous comments about clunky upshifts/downshifts on the new 10-speed.

I'm not saying the new Tundra is all that as I have read plenty of threads about the new Safety Sense issues but by in large the issues I read about on Tundra's versus the competition are minute.

If they rated it on performance, reliability, and resell then Tundra would be number 1 despite it being "archaic".

Emphasis with this rag is on "CARS" and drivers. I'd rather do my own test with a truck.

I think it's a fair score. C&D is in the business of measuring new vehicles, and by any measurable score, the Tundra is going to lose to the competition. Durability and reliability aren't measurable on a new truck. The only time magazines rate it differently would be on a long-term test, or if you're Consumer Reports, and the difference in how Tundras score in those comparisons is clear.

When I was shopping for trucks this time around, the styling, ride characteristics, turning radius, and being a satisfied 10-year owner of my last Tundra put my new '18 over the F150 3.5 I had on my shortlist. In terms of performance and features as a new truck, I agree the F150 absolutely demolishes the competition.

Most 4X4 mags do a long term test for example. I don't even waste my time on new vehicle tests from certain mags. Just like I don't give a rat's ass about movie reviews by the "experts".

Chevy shake is a real issue, I had a regular cab 2014 Silverado before my Tundra. Needed to move up to a v8 and bigger cab so naturally I went and looked at the Silverado double cab and I could not find one that didn't shake. It was so noticeable on the interstate...no way I could of got used to it.

Summary of the 1/2 ton pickup market today:

You want the latest and greatest in features and tech? Ford

You want to keep your truck for longer than 5 years? Toyota

You want to modify it as a lowrider or modify to make over 600hp? GM

You want to modify it as a bro truck? Ram

    You have bad credit? Nissan

I owned nothing but Chevy’s until 2011. My experiences:

First vehicle I ever owned, my grandfather’s 89 Chevy Silverado:

Starter went out twice a year, at least. I learned to beat on it with a wrench to get me to the parts house, and got to where I could change the starter in 5-10 minutes.
That said, it was pretty solid. Transmission went out at 220k, motor went out at 280k. Changed pretty much every part on that truck in the ten years I drove it. (It was incredibly easy to work on though.)

Wife’s 1999 Tahoe: Alternator failed at 20k, transmission blew at 76k.

2003 Silverado: Nothing real major. Heater core leaked at 120k, but no other real issues. (Sold the truck at 123k though, when I bought my first Tundra.)

Wife’s 2003 Tahoe: Fuel pump went out at 40k. Floorboard rusted out around 120k. Water pump went out around 180k. In laws still driving it.

2011 Tundra: Alternator went out around 100k. May have been my fault. Battery went bad, didn’t replace it in a timely manner. Currently has 112k, daughter driving it.

2012 Sequoia: Currently about 180k miles. No failures, even minor ones. Have only changed oil, tires, battery, brakes. Wife still driving it, still runs perfectly.

2017 Tundra: Currently about 12k. It’s totally badass. Gets me laid frequently. I give it three thumbs up.

In conclusion, I had mixed luck with my Chevy’s. Pretty much all of them left me or my wife stranded on several occasions. (One time, my wife was 300 miles away when it broke down.) In my seven plus years of Toyota ownership, it hasn’t happened once. Also not listed were all the little things that went out, like radio, a/c controls, etc.

Also telling is the fact that I got pretty much jack shit for resale value on any of them. That’s why we just gave the 2003 Tahoe to the in laws. Wouldn’t have gotten anything for it.

It sure the hell is. For the life of me, I would never even consider recommending a GM 1500 in any trim package. The Chevy shake would just make me more mad than a beaver stuck in the UAE.

It took me two years after test driving/towing a limited Tundra for a purchase (12’ CM).

I was impressed, but at the time I was still a little on the heavy side for one. I was surprised they let me hook to their used truck and go flog it.

    A7555E51-60F0-4640-AF12-DBD80E4CA32D.jpg

I was still doing this stuff...

    E25D5C57-B9D0-4F66-9E36-8D32974EB4D0.jpg

When looking at vehicles, I too look at consumer reports and other long term testing. I also like to visit private repair shops. When asking about the Tundra trucks, most of the shops would comment:

“You know, we don’t see those often, maybe for an oil change.”

    “Never seen one in here.”

As a few other have said, Car & Driver is a new vehicle, latest and greatest magazine. That doesn’t make them bad, just not a great place for the “big” picture.

Looked at ALL the offerings when it came time to quit fighting rust on my 07 Titan . Even briefly considered the Ridgeline . There’s a new Tundra in my driveway for a reason . It fit my needs and wants better than theother vehicles .

I have to agree with your statements. C&D’s placement was based on what the ‘18 models have to offer compared with others in the class. Their only real gripe about the tundra was that its outdated.

My buddy has a ford with the triton motor and regrets not buying a tundra when he had a chance to. He’s had to replace almost the entire motor.

I own 3 toyotas myself and do my own maintenance. Only time my 2000 has been to the shop was to have rear passenger side bearing replaced.

Try to find a good used Toyota on the market (any model), tough to do. Try to find used Chevy, Ford or Dodge, they are all over the place.

I've always been a Toyota fan ever since I bought a used 1982 SR5 pickup back in the day. Also had a 1985 Supra that I put over 250,000 miles on. I have a new 2018 in the garage after 12 perfect years with my 2006 Tundra that I racked up 225,000 miles (my daughter now owns it and will probably put another 200,000 miles on it).

    'nuff said...

The very first photo (4 trucks) has a right arrow on it once the page completely loads, click the arrow which brings you to the Tundra. At the end of the short description click on the blue link "read more" and it will take you to the complete review in a new tab. You have to do each truck that way.

As a previous 2012 Ram owner I cannot disagree more my ram was a complete POS I finally gave up on it and traded it in with 37k miles good riddance so far I absolutely love my tundra.
