Canopy help

this might be a dumb question but looking for a cap for my 2015 crewmax.will other makes and models fit a tundra? Or does it have to be a tundra specific canopy? Say one from a 2nd gen tundra or one from a dodge 1500 etc.

 

You're going to have to find one from a 2014+ Tundra. Anything else won't quite fit, even from a 2nd gen.

Any advice one a good one to buy? I found a leer not sure the model but looks nice I’ll try and post a pic.


I’ll need to put a roof top tent on it to.

Three previous used trucks I've purchased all came with Leer canopies, so when I bought my 2018 brand new I went out and purchased a Leer. I never had any problems with any of them. My current 2010 came with a Leer as well. I almost bought an ARE for my 2018 just because it was a bit cheaper for a comparable model, but some people have been saying ARE's quality and customer service have gone downhill, plus the dealer near me gave me some bad vibes.

If you're adding a roof top tent you might "technically" have to get a commercial model rated for more weight, because I'm pretty sure the standard models are not rated for very much weight on the roof.

Good to know....ya that’s what I need to find out is weight ratings on them. If not I’ll juat keep my bed bars and when I wanna use the tent on swap everything only takes about 20 Min.

 

Wow, that's a really good deal for that! From the looks of the pic I think that's a 100XL, which is probably $2500+ brand new.

 

That was my guess to was the 100xl but wasn’t to sure...it’s at a dealership and I went by looked at it when they were closed it was locked up of course but one side of the glass on the rear wasn’t latched I put some pressure on it to see if it would latch and nothing hope it’s not broke...I’ll go back in and give it another look.

 

I mean even if you had to fork over a few bucks to replace a possibly-broken latch it would still be a killer deal if all else is in good shape.

Check out Snug Top as well. A little more expensive but you get what you pay for. You can also get reinforced roofs to support RTTs, etc. I’m partial to the Rebel model.

 

WOW! $700 for that topper is a shamokin' deal! I would have a joygasm if I could get one around here for that price let alone $500. Make sure you come back and update this thread with the outcome.

 

Some of the canopy manufacturers may be able to give you the load rating if you can provide the canopy serial number.

 

UPDATE: so latch is broken no big deal but lock is locked and no key...dealer said $500 since it has these issues....

Do you guys think I could just drill out the lock? Or should I get a locksmith what’s my best option? It’s currenty on the truck to so not sure if the tailgate will even open with the glass down and locked.

Locksmith is $50 to unlock it. But I think I’ll just drill it unless that will mess with unlocking the latches etc.

 

If you do end up buying it, take it to the nearest retailer/ dealer of those canopies and they can fix it. My wife got the key stuck in one of my old canopies. The dealer was able to change out the lock free of charge, it was under warranty though.

 

I say definitely get it if they're giving it to you for $500! You should be able to get those issues taken care of for relatively cheap, and then you'll have a really nice canopy for an awesome deal.

 

I need to get it unlocked to take it off the truck it’s off tho should I drill it?

 

Any way you can crawl through the rear window to remove the mounting brackets so you don't have to drill it?

 

Buy it and take it to a Leer dealer.

 

I’m 6’5” 220 lbs lol idk if I’ll fit....locksmith said $50 to unlock it....

 

I need to figure out how to get it off the truck it’s on first lol...

 

But I can try for sure then take it to the dealer they are down the road just a couple miles

All that lock does is keep the knob from rotating and pulling on the cables to release side latches. If you can get inside, find where the cable routes to the latches on either side and pull on the cable and you should have your window unlocked.

 

I’d try to keep from drilling it out. $50 bucks for a locksmith is cheaper than a new knob

 

I’ll try that.....it will need a new lock regardless since the owner lost the keys but they are cheap....I should have it Monday I’ll keep you guys posted thanks for the info

 

This is a push button lock...it’s the same type of mechanism tho?
