Can you talk me into a crewmax from a DC?

    Playing with fire here...

I've ordered a Lunar Rock pro DC as I want to build the bed into a camper with a topper. No kids, just one large dog and he doesn't get an opinion on back seat size. I'm 97% sure I want the DC but...

My SLC dealership still doesn't have a date for the DC to get built. And they're already getting the crewmaxes. I've heard from another dealer that he wouldn't be surprised if it's as late as January for the DC. I live in the mountains and would like my truck before winter hits. Should I be reconsidering the crewmax? Will I regret the shorter bed and subsequent complications to turn it into a camping rig? That moonroof and rear window though........

I went from only trucks with a 6.5 bed down to the 5.5 bed and I don't regret it. The extra cab space is nice. The back window is a moot point if you're going to put a topper on it, but its awesome to have. Once the topper goes on, most things that wont fit in the DC won't fit in the CM either. Resale probably better on the crewmax too.

Good point on the back window:facepalm:

There's a tonneau cover in my near future but also, I'm not putting any windows down when it's 10 degrees out this winter

Will you sleep in the bed? Get a DC.

That's the plan, but I'm only 5'6" and used to live and travel in a Subaru outback. I never considered the CM until hearing that the DC might be super delayed. I can wait, but I don't want to.

I think if you're wanting to turn the bed into a camper, and that's your "primary" purpose for having the truck, a DC is going to be the better bet.

I'm 6' and the Mrs. is 5' 6" and we both fit comfortably in the queen size bed in the back of our DC truck. Never had the 5.5 bed but I'm pretty sure that extra foot on the DC is going to make a huge difference for what you want to do.

    Edit: to add pics

Don't settle for a truck you're only 3% sure about. Wait for the dc.

Rear window rolling all the way down is awesome!
I roll that way anytime it is above freezing!

Does it have to be a pro? Could get a DC in another trim and use the price difference to add lift and tires.

At your heighth, a 5.5' bed maybe ok, but why chance it. If set on a pro, just wait. First few months of winter may suck, but will be worth it once in your new truck.

Isn’t the question simply would you prefer that foot of space to be in the bed or in the cab?

If I’m sleeping in the back then I want it in the back.

You made it clear, you’re 5’6” and are planning on sleeping in the bed on camping trips. No point in settling for a crewmax just because you want a truck before winter. You can always look for a new DC out of state and drive it home.

Wait on DC and get what you want. Esp if you are camping in it and don’t have kids. You’ll like the extra room in the bed.

I started reconsidering the limited OR, but this truck is a gift, and I was told to pick out exactly what I want, and I want the pro.

Alright, I'll stop shopping around and wait on the DC. I'm still crossing fingers that it'll be here in another month or so, but after truck shopping for 6+ months, I finally decided on the DC, I didn't want to wait another 5 months. But I'll put my big girl pants on and wait impatiently.

I have a CM and if I were in your situation, I'd definitely wait for a DC. A pickup isn't the best vehicle for winter driving anyway.

I've got a 4wd explorer for the time being, and access to a big daddy diesel 1 ton if I need a truck for now. I'm just not good at waiting. Damn covid

No kids get DC, my biggest compromise on my CM is the 5’8” bed. Dam toyota could just shorten the cab 4” give us CM folks a full 6’ bed.

    Get DC!

I can tell you this: I have two kids and used to have a crewmax, then had to get rid of it and got a DC. I do not sorely miss the crewmax. The extra cab space is nice, but my two kids are both in car seats and there is plenty of room in the back, and adults say they even have enough space when they rarely ride back there. On top of that, I love the extra bed space I have now. Especially since you don't have kids, I would say it's a no-brainer to get a DC unless you frequently have large adults riding in the back for long distances.

I have a CM and I normally would encourage the crewmax to others also that need interior space. But for your needs and situation, I would wait for the DC and get what you want.

When I say that I love my CM, I really mean it. But, for your needs, sounds like you would be happier with the XC and longer bed.

I only got a CM because I was told 2 car seats wouldn't fit very well in the back of a DC. Are you saying I should have got a DC?

I've heard that rear facing are tight, and work better behind a small passenger in the front, but front facing and booster seats are more manageable. This is actually a work vehicle/gift and I'm a nanny, so it was somewhat relevant as I might drive the kids around in it but the parents told me to not make my decision on the kid's legroom :)

DC would better fit what you want. Love my CM, but I need the bigger cab for my use vs the bed that you need for yours. Wait and be completely happy vs wonder.

    Wait. Seriously. Wait.

If I was single with dog, it would be no question (it would actually be a 6 foot bed Tacoma with a four wheel camper!)

Remember, kids arent in rear facing seats for anywhere near the time that they are in front facing seats or boosters (many years).

I went from a Tacoma long-bed to a Tundra CM (both with shells). I’m 6’1 and previously lived in my Tacoma for a summer with a bed & dog. I do wish the CM had a longer bed but my lady & I have camped with the tailgate down and it kinda worked... but just wasn’t the same. If you're going to do a buildout get the bed get the length you need. It will bug you if you compromise and go with the instant gratification. Just my two cents.

I revisited the Tacomas too. But based on my own experiences with them, they are pretty underwhelming on big mountain passes, and I plan on towing a snowmobile. I thought that was the truck of my dreams for a long time...
