Just got a 2016 5.7 tundra crew cab (I think that is it) my trailer is about 5000lbs loaded and my question is one in tow haul mode can I use cruise control and if yes I would only use it when its on the flats for a long distance, would that be safe? Any thoughts most of all people that have done it or why I should not think about it.

It's not recommend but I do on a flat road on a calm day. Just be on your toes

Cruise control makes the trans hunt for gears more frequently i feel. I wonder if you leave it in 5th gear maybe cruise control is fine to use?

I use CC all the time with my little cargo trailer, but a camper I’m not sure

Is it a safety issue or mechanical?

I’d say a little bit of both. I figure it’s OK to use on the flats if you’re in the right gear and it’s not shifting all over the place. I personally don’t like as I like to feel connected when I’m hauling something.

Not really in the context of your question, probably a lower GVWR rating as they are lighter. I use cruise control but only on the flats....

Towing with CC the truck starts hunting for gears and can’t find a steady place of where it wants to be.

Without CC: She stays in OD pretty good while towing, unless there is a strong headwind or hills.

    Conclusion: No towing with CC.

Gen 1 doesn’t have as strong of an overdrive gear. Supposed to tow in drive i believe

Yes, you can. But, I would do it on flat wide open areas and if you feel the tranny shifting a lot I would stop. I ran through SD with my boat on back for stretches and it was fine. I just used common sense and paid attention.

None! I tow a boat weekly
I use it while towing my bass boat on more level areas. Going up mountains the cruise will kick off. So the answer is yes and no.

Thanks again for all your opinions and thoughts, I had a jeep once and although it did not have CC it had over drive and I learned the hard way don't tow in OD, but I learned that after replacing my Transmission, don't want to have to do that again. Again I was thinking only on the flats like in the middle of CA on the 5 or 99 hwy and only in dry and no wind conditions. For those that don't know in CA if you are towing you are to stay at 55 mph but you can move up to 60 once in a while but stay to the right. I try to do that!
