Just wanted everyone to know I had a 2011 Tundra Crewmax and started it one cold morning with a remote starter. I shut it off and the cam cover leaked onto the exhaust and POOF up it went! Had my insurance company, the remote starter insurance company and owner of the electronics company who installed the remote start meet with a fire investigator in Columbus Ohio to do a investigation on what caused the fire and when they where done it was 100% leaking oil on the exhaust manifold! Before I found out the findings I bought a 2014 Tundra so now do ya think I'm a little nervous! My insurance agent did give notice to Toyota of the findings but until there's a stack of dead body's does anyone think they will fix this? I don't. Here are some picture's for your viewing enjoyment, just imagine what my wife felt when I bust in the front door of our house at 3:30am yelling Fire! Fire! Fire!

Welcome from Ohio. Man that really sucks about your truck. Glad no one was hurt and yes it would be nice if they take note of the problem and just cover the cost of the fix.

Oh crap! Wow....this is the first one I've actually heard of that caught fire because of the leak. Damn! Hope this comes to Toyota's attention and also I hope your insurance is taking care of you. I've checked my 08 and I don't see any leaking that I can tell from what other people have posted.

The truck didn't have any leaks from anywhere but the investigator said it was a small one just enough to go up. I unloaded a fire extinguisher on it with almost no effect. Then our local Police department did the same. It held off the house from going up also before the fire department showed up.

    Not nearly enough room here!
Maybe what's needed is for you to join every Ford, GM, Fiat Chrysler and Nissan Truck Web Forum and tell THEM your story, complete with pics. Might be a couple TV stations + what ever Social Media you belong to would be interested too.. Raise hell with Toyota but do it where it'll hurt.....publicity. Didn't take long for Mr. Toyoda to get on TV and cry like a little girl, over the phony-ass gas pedal fiasco did it?

I always wondered how they determine the cause of a fire on things that look like that....

Dude sorry to hear. Glad the family is alright.

Is this a known issue outside of normal wear or leaks that can occur? I'm just not familiar enough but that was my impression from the first few posts.

I sure hope the investigator can definitively prove this was caused by the cam tower leak. If so, I don't know how Toyota can not issue a recall for a documented fire hazard like this.

My insurance agent said that Toyota wouldn't do any thing with a vehicle more than 3 years old. As for the tow mirrors I just bought some for my 2014 they plugged right in with driving lights and turn signals built in plug n play for $157.99/pair from topcn-autoparts on EBay and love them!

Wow! I think the NHTSA should also be made aware of this. It has now been confirmed to be a serious safety issue as opposed to just being an annoying little leak.

Agreed, With a documented case like this they will have to take action.

Insurance / Progressive did pay without any problems. Thanks Progressive. But I wish someone could persuade Toyota to fix this mess. What we're going to have to do is come up with a shield above the exhaust manifolds to let the oil that leaks (only if its in small amounts) to be diverted past the manifolds to drop on the ground. Even if we reseal the cam plates it will leak again later. It's a design issue not gasket. In my opinion. Ive worked for Honda MFG for 25 years and I can see how this issue won't be fixed until the cam plate to head has to be designed differently. Which won't help all of us 09 to current owners.
