Tonight heading up Teton Pass I passed a car and went to punch it and got a bad smell of something burning. Smelled just like a clutch burning. I backed off and smell went away. Anyone had this smell before? Did I do any harm to my 4WD? No codes thrown so I figure no real harm was done.

That a good point, I did pass Subaru struggling a bit hence why I pass him or her. I didn't really think of that, probably has a manual transmission too. Would explain the exact same smell as clutch burning and it was pungent.

I drive my truck in 4HI at interstate speeds up and down plenty of hills here in VT and never smelled anything unusual.

According to the manual not supposed to drive in 4HI more then 55 mph. Not sure how fast you travel on the hwy but here in California everyone is 80MPH

Really? The first gen manual doesn't say anything like that. You just have to below 62 to engage 4wd. I pretty much never take it out during the winter. 70-75 for hundreds of miles.

Drove my truck once in 4Hi for about 30 miles at 75mph on long straight stretch of interstate before I realized it. Buddy is a master tech at toyota dealership so I messaged him and he said dont even worry about it. No problem at all.

If you’re doing over the speed limit on the highway and 4 high, you probably shouldn’t. If you can go that fast the road must not be that bad. Because four-wheel-drive isn’t going to help you stop.

I use 4WD here in Colorado when the road conditions suck. I really don’t remember going any faster than 55. IMO if you need to go faster then the roads aren’t bad enough to need it or you’re under the assumption that in 4WD you can drive like it’s a sunny day.
OP, I would just keep an eye on it and see if you smell it again. Have you changed your diff and transfer case fluids?
