When do you need new bump stops? Is it only when doing long travel?

Some lifts require bump stop mods.

Like if you purchased the Bilstein 6112 and put them on the top setting, I do believe a bump stop modification is required.

Top setting of 5100 requires some washers under the bump stops is all. Forget which size but dont need new ones.

If you are lifted, Wheelers also sells spacers that you can add under the superbumps.

I planned on doing the boss coilovers, but I may set them at more like 2-2.5 inches. Wondering if it would be better to use the washers wheeler's sells, or do their superbumps? I always read about all these people doing lifts, but not many talk about if they run aftermarket bump stops or not.

I talked with David at Toytec and he said the Boss kit includes bumpstop washers to extend them. Just FYI.

Big discussion. If you’re referring to longer bump stops, this is only needed if your setup might cause the coilover shaft to bottom out internally which could damage it. This is definitely the case if you use a spacer lift where the spacer bolts on top of the coilover top hat. In this case, you’ve moved the upper portion of the coilover down an inch or so. When the bottom comes up over a hard bump, it’s going to smash the internals and bend or break something. If you use some less expensive lifted coilovers, this could also be the case. But with King coilovers and many others, this isn’t an issue. However, you can improve your bottom out by switching to a better bump stop like the wheelers. Trust me, it will improve your ride by introducing some progressive damping at near bottom out, and a soft bottom out.

    Great info.
I run these on the front of my Tacoma rock crawler. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/EIB-EBS770060
The shocks are LONG for maximum droop travel but because the leaf springs sit close to flat at ride height I only have about 4" of up travel in the shocks. Between the shock stops and the traditional bump stops on the front I get a pretty nice, soft, almost floating feeling. It's a great progressive bottom out for the front.
