This is my first prototype and would love to get some feedback. This was temporarily put in place so it’s not completely straight and I have a few other modifications to make for the final design.

Let me know your thoughts or if you have any other types of effects you would like to see.

That’s pretty nice. I’m not big on all the colors but a night rider type of thing would be awesome.

Very cool! How about a scrolling marquee that says "PUSH THE PEDAL ON THE RIGHT HARDER!"

Yeah, same here. I just threw in the rainbow to help show off color options.
Maybe I’ll add a scrolling red/white/blue fade instead of the rainbow. ;)

I'm sure you're aware of this, but just as an FYI anyway, most of those colors are illegal for street use.

For sure! Impressive prototype. I'd love for someone to come up with an OLED one that is programmable for shapes and patterns.

That is just awesome. I need details on this. I want this as I am adding rgb lights to my rig.
Go here and join and post this. You will get some ideas. This is a group I created to help others with mods and DIYs.
This would fit in nicely there.
And, I really do want this.

@konzz77 thanks. I’ll keep you posted. If I feel ambitious enough, I’ll sell it (once it’s more finalized).
If I’m not that ambitious, I’ll write up all the details so you can make your own.

Theirs is more for real off-road lighting. This is just for looks, doesn’t provide much usable illumination.

But, yeah, when I saw their night-rider effect I said “I have to have that!” ...then I saw the price tag and said “I’ll just make it myself for $50”

Yeah, I had him make those for me. Came out really nice. I should have them by Friday. Cost me a little, but well worth it I think. That is why I like what you did. I was just thinking about an hour ago of how to add RGB to my bulge, then this pops up. Now, I got to do this. LOL

Ah really? That's a bummer. If it had significant light output you'd have a home run!

Quick update: I've got a patriotic effect working well (red/white/blue) and was able to make a tweak to increase the brightness noticeably. I have a few more parts coming in a day or two that I need for the final mount and then I can post another video with the updates. Should look better and brighter. Can't wait to put together a new video!

I am hoping to use bluetooth for controlling the lights from an iPhone app. That will take a little longer to do since I've never worked with bluetooth or written iPhone apps, but from what I've learned already I should have a testable model for my own use in about 2 weeks.

I think my plans are to do a detailed write up of the parts and the install process, so if anyone wants to make their own, they can do so. I will provide links to all the parts on Amazon, but I will also try to sell a kit of all the parts (some of them come as a 3-pack or 5-pack so if I get several people interested, it's easy for me to put together a kit and sell the remaining portions of my bundles).

I have mixed feelings on whether or not I will sell it as a complete product, or if I'll just give away all of my programming and work and make the iPhone app free. I would like to make a tiny bit of money off of this fun hobby, but I'm also getting a lot of my resources, tutorials, and sample code for free from various sources as I learn these new languages; so I feel awkward asking for money for something I wouldn't be able to do if it wasn't for the generosity of others posting free resources.

Maybe I'll just charge for the iPhone app and give the rest of it away, including the software for programming the micro controller.
    ...we'll see.

How difficult would it be to put in high-powered Cree LED's in there as well for an off-road application?

The Cree LEDs need a lot of space for the reflectors and for the heatsink (they generate a lot of heat) so there wouldn't be room for both in the hood bulge. At least, that's from what little I know about the Cree ones.

Oh, and just to give you an idea of the cost on this, roughly $90 for parts. At least that's with what I am currently using and testing with, final design could be different.
