Well, I am currently broken down on the side of the road. The Tundra lost all power while driving about 40mph.

I am waiting on a friend to bring me some tools and a gas can, as I am betting I know the issue.

My Tundra has run out of gas before, when it said it had 1/4 of a tank.

This time it has 1/3 of a tank. I had been watching the fuel mileage thinking I was getting better than normal. So fingers crossed that I just ran out of gas and the gauge needs to be fixed.

I remember you having a sending unit issue.

Personally, I would set a realistic mileage (200 miles empty, 125 miles towing) and fuel up at that mileage if there are no plans to fix this issue.

Fuel injection systems don’t like running out of fuel. One vehicle I was test driving ran out of fuel and cost the dealership over 1000.00 plus a tow.

Indeed, I recall us talking about this issue around a year ago. Normally I fill up around 1/3 of a tank. However, I suppose that is not the best metric to go by, lol. It took 4 Gallons of gas and disconnecting the battery to get it to get going. I am a cheapskate so I likely will not fix it until my fuel pump goes and needs to be replaced (no telling when that might be...).

I am just going to start marking the Trip A and gassing up close to 200 Miles to avoid this. I also am going to strap down 2 - 5 Gallon Jerry cans in the back. I might build some kind of box/armor for them as I don't want them to get damaged. You have any recommendations for this?

Sounds like a good plan but after all that work why not just drop the tank and fix it? Or both LOL

bad fuel sending unit - had the same issue. If you go the gas can route use ethanol free gas as it last longer and doesn't go bad as I have been told. Everyone I know stores Ethanol free gas for their generators.

That is good to know. It makes sense when someone tells you, but I never would have thought of it otherwise.
LOL, everyone always gets the same impression of me, whether it is at work or socially.

The truck ran out gas, despite the gauge showing it had 1/3 of a tank. The issue is a bad fuel sending unit.
