So I just picked up a brand new 2019 Tundra TRD Pro in white. I bought it on my first visit into the dealership and didn't wait for them to detail it before taking it home. It's been about 2 weeks since I bought it and I just noticed these tiny black specs and some have a brown outer ring around them. They look like tiny rust spots. They are not noticeable from 10 feet but when you get closer and look they become very visible like the pictures will show. 90% of the spots are smooth but there are a few that feel rough, either raised or indented. They are covering the entire car wherever there is white paint. After doing some research I've seen a lot of people not happy with the white Toyota paint. I plan on taking it back tomorrow to see what they say and I'm expecting them to fix it. Has anyone had this happen and have some advice before I take it back in? If they say they can't do anything I'll be extremely surprised and definitely contemplate returning it. Thanks for any help.20190829_191558.jpg 20190916_145901.jpg

    Welcome from NY.

Good luck, hopefully they don't say it wasn't like that when you took it home 2 weeks ago.

My boss's 2010 had something similar show up at about 14 months. I'd assumed Toyota had fixed it by now. Toyota resprayed it.

Does the letter give a year or vin range? I just bought a super white 2019.

What you are seeing is called rail dust, it’s from the brakes on the trains. It needs to be clay bared off NOW.

Sorta my thought too as being a transit issue but never thought of brake dust on rail transit, interesting. OP should see if it's on any of the places that are covered in plastic when they ship. They would be unaffected.

It seems like the new paint Toyota has been using in recent years has been less durable than years past. It's a shame. Hopefully you get this remedied by Toyota ASAP.

I'm in the paint shop weekly. There's a lot of difference from a Toyota paint job and a Lexus paint job. If you ever really saw the paint in the correct inspection lighting you see an orange peel finish.

This particular problem happens on all makes and models, it’s not isolated to Toyota. Probably will not see it if you buy a truck that was sold close to the plant because it was not on the train.
I don’t see a lot of Toyota paint issues, but Nissan and Honda are another story.

You are absolutely right. It can also be from brake dust from the transportation trucks.
This can easily be cleaned off with a good decontamination wash, and perhaps some mechanical decontamination (clay bar) for those spots that are more stubborn.

From a refinishing point of view Lexus and Toyota are about the same. I’m not saying they don’t take more time with the Lexus , but the end results are not much different.

Welcome and congrats on one bad ass truck! Just curious why would you take delivery before having the dealer detail it? They may have corrected this issue before you took delivery of the truck. I would say give the dealer a chance to correct the issue since you didn’t give them the opportunity to do so upon purchase.

Noted. Best damn finish for a regular car I've seen is a Mercedes. Ex had a 2003 and 10 years later it was still nice with no oxidation in the CC.

For sure, and BMW was pretty good. I don’t see a lot of the higher end cars. We are a bunch of poor folks around here.

Yeah, great paint jobs but lots of expensive electrical gadget problems on Germans. I'm happy with mine on my 15. Someone kept it up.

Yeah, imagine someone is using a grinder and letting the sparks hit the truck, now let it rain or even just morning dew. Instant rust, can happen over night. Don’t worry about it, it will come off. Just find a good detail shop. I promise it’s very common.

He's telling you that these trucks are transported on rail cars. The dealer should inspect the delivery. White shows everything. Not sure of your AOO but if it left the local area it was on a railcar. The dealer is responsible so don't pay out of your pocket. That's why you buy a yota

You're absolutely right. I got too excited and wanted to drive it. The guys at the dealership were great and I'm sure they'll have no problem detailing it for me even though I've had it for a couple weeks.

Same thing similar happened to me a while back. Bought a truck, wanted to take it right away, and then noticed the tailgate looked like it have been hit with a sandblaster. Turned out the tailgate wasn't covered when they trucked it in from wherever and it was bug, rock, etc from the drive. It was on top, in front, tailgate forward. Called the bank, stopped the check, and took it back to the dealer. Evidently, they had cleaned it, but the detailer never notified anyone. Whoever checked it in when it came in hadn't noticed it either.

They said it was my fault. I told them I did not drive down the highway backwards at 70mph and it was evident some of it was bug hits. I also told them I had stopped the check. This particular truck had black decals spelling TOYOTA all across the back of the tailgate so it was very evident. Also had chips in the paint.

They ended up replacing the tailgate and filed a claim with the transport company. We then went over the truck in detail and found while the passenger side had black trim and the driver side had chrome. Told them there was no way that could be considered my fault. They fixed that also.

Now I go over the car with a white LED bar and check everything before taking possession.

So it definitely is rail dust. Bringing it back Tuesday for the detailer to work on it. I appreciate all the help and comments. Definitely learned my lesson, always have the dealership clean and detail your car before you pick it up.

Their detail is a drive thru wash mainly. I avoid them with Betsy

That rail dust is the worst. When we picked up my wife’s pearl Sienna a couple years ago from the dealer, same thing. Again, my on next new white car, a metallic white F250, exact same thing.

I ended up clay baring both, followed up with a good wash and wax. It was actually a satisfying detail job. Knock it out yourself, and enjoy the beautiful truck!

Rail dust for sure. I used Poor Boys iron remover spray and clay bar. Fresh paint is soft and contaminates easily imbedded themselves in it.

You just have surface paint oxidation. Just buy a remover and spray your truck down and remove the surface oxidation. It’s normal for contamination to Seattle on car paints. You should clay the truck while you’re at it also.
