I had the Borla universal muffler #40349 installed today. This muffler is stainless and features dual 2.5" inlets and a single 3" exit (reversible design). The inside of the muffler looks like a giant Y pipe with honeycomb packing on the sides. There is NOTHING restricting exhaust flow. Physically it is the same length of the OE, but much slimmer (the OE muffler has an "S" flow and travels back over itself, very restrictive). The OE pipes are dual 2.3" at inlet, and 2.8" outlet side.

My first impressions: it's quiet. About the same at idle. Minimally louder than stock at throttle. There is drone at the 1500-1900 RPM range on highway.

I've been reading that it will get louder with a few thousand miles on it (hopefully).

The muffler cost $120 shipped, install was also $120 and took 1hr at the muffler shop.

Would I do it again: at this time, NO. Very disappointing how quiet it is. I am not looking for something obnoxious, but this is barely louder than the OE muffler.

I hope perspective buyers find this mini review helpful. I will be sure to update when I get a few thousand miles through it.

    OE muffler:

Inlet side: goes about 3/4 into muffler, loops around to exit

Exit side: this goes to the other end of the case and loops around from inlet of muffler

    *** UPDATE ***

Few hundred miles later, def made the muffler sound better. Due to excessive drone, I installed the DD resonator. WOW huge dif. The sound is much quieter, but the 1800rpm drone is gone!

easy to install - I chose to drill a bunch of holes, hit w 4" angle grinder, one hammer tap and its out, used a stone wheel on dremel and hand file. Took about 5-10 mins to cut and trim hole, only because I wanted it to look nice.

Probably lost low end torque because you have larger pipes from stock. Get a bamuffler, get your torque back and will sound badass.

I would think the power would be similar to Keith’s because he has a free flow muffler, but still uses the stock tailpipe.

Yes but you use 3in tailpipe which will lose some low end torque. I would of kept my stock tailpipe. But i heard borla before and it is very quiet. Get and 8 or 6 standard system.

The muffler has a 3 inch outlet, but I think he’s still using the stock tailpipe.

I have basically the same setup as this but a magnaflow. I used to have a BA system. I can tell you all that the BA system makes more power noticeably in mid range

Yes. Stock tail pipe. Only change was the muffler.

Do you notice any difference in how it runs - acceleration, holding highway speed...

I did something similar before as well. Went to local muffler shop and had Flowmaster FlowFX installed. It sounded decent, louder than stock but the drone was too much incab so I had them put in a resonator, which helped with drone but also killed the sound outside where I felt that the noise incab was more than outside. Didn't think it was worthit so I went back to stock.

Fast forward a couple months after that, I went with BAMuffler 10" and been very impressed with the sound in and outside. It's the perfect combination IMO

I put a Gibson muffler on mine. Droned pretty bad like you mentioned. Put a resonator from Dirty Deeds on it and the drone is gone

all this feedback is great, appreciate y'all posting your experiences it so helpful to the rest of us who are in similar stages of modification. I went back and forth and tried finding the perfect aftermarket exhaust. Well at the end of the day I personally decided to stop trying to ignore the information that a majority here had already discovered, and that is Dirty Deeds. IMO it always pointed to or ended up back to one of the Dirty Deeds offerings. I finally stopped fighting it and ordered the Standard 8" system. Buy once, cry once and done, again just my ultimate conclusion on the this particular MOD.

Damn that looks like too much work.

I used a 2" hole saw to drill the hole for my DD resonator.
Drill 2 holes (1st drilled a small pilot hole) and done.

I first had a magnaflow on my 2014 5.7, sounded great but the drone from hell on the highway.
Added Kieth's Helmholtz res and killed the drone, but knocked the sound down to stock.
Ditched the Magnaflow for DD custom 7", 2 years later swapped it for his 10".
    Perfect now...

I did not have a metal hole saw bit on hand and didn't want to ruin my wood ones. Just used stuff on hand and it really did not take more than a few minutes to knock it out.

How did the 7" DD system compare to the magnaflow muffler? I may go w the DD 6" system to replace this.

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
I went with the biggest Magnaflow muffler to get the straight through performance yet quiet sound. Kept the stock tail pipe. Truck sounded good but the drone was horrible! Learning my lesson, I went with my original choice and got the TRD exhaust. No complaints and no regrets. These trucks are awesome and when it comes down to exhaust, you really only have 2 choices -TRD or @dirtydeeds. Just my $0.02.

Well, the magnaflow sounded stock after the resonator, I mean literally like the OEM muffler.
I got the 7 because I couldn't decide on the 6 or 8, come to find out the 7 sounded pretty much like a friend's 8.
I had the 7 for a couple years, but it is little louder than I wanted.
It had a rasp in it when you really get on it.
Also my work schedule at the time I was getting home at 3 or 4 AM and I didn't want to pi$$ off my neighbors every morning even idling down the street and backing up into the driveway.

I wanted some thing quieter so Keith swapped the 7 for 10.
Although I liked the idle and startup of the 7 ( I use the remote start almost every time I start just to hear the muffler) I like the driving sound of the 10.
I should have gotten the 10 in the first place.

Did you keep your old muffler?
The problem I had was the shop cut the OEM pipe when they installed the maganflow.
Fortunately for some reason I kept the stock muffler.
I had to have them remove the magnaflow and weld the rear pipe back on so I could install (bolt on) the DD muffler.
The DD bolts on to the existing OEM exhaust system pipes.
They did such a crappy job welding it on, I bought an entire new OEM tailpipe.
I also think my welded on tailpipe tip helps with the sound, but that might just be all in my head.
