I just noticed one of my Bilstein 6112s is leaking oil. According to the internet, if a shock is leaking you should stop driving immediately. I don’t think it’s been leaking for long as I just noticed it and have looked under there recently. Is it generally ok to drive until it gets replaced? As long as I’m aware and know to not take bumps too fast?

Ordered these last Aug. Installed in Sep. So I’ve had it for only about 7 months. No hard driving.

Also, Bilstein blows. They have an option when you call for warranty, but repeated the same answer - you have to call the seller. Trying to get ahold of them, but assume I’ll have to take it off and mail it back. Which I obviously can’t do and still drive to work. Probably going to get Icons sooner than expected.

It'll be ok to drive like that

Thanks. I’ve never had a leaking shock. Does it look like it’s bad, or is this somewhat normal tolerance for leaking? Should I send it in for warranty?

Never mind. I saw what looks like something hit the shock body but I see it leaking above that.

Part of the black on it was overspray by ziebart that is wearing off. I’m going to go to a car wash again and clean it good to check how bad it is. Shock isn’t damaged as far as I have seen. But something is definitely leaking down on the lower control arm.

If there’s no damage then it should be covered.

One of my 6112s leak and both of my 5160s leak but I've got over 90k on them. I'm on the same boat as you gotta drive the truck so no warranty claims for me I'll just throw new ones on eventually.

Can’t seem to see or find the leak in the photos yet, but either way it doesn’t sound good. Plenty of us have 6112s, so please post updates for our sake.

I’ll update with how the warranty works. If I have to take it off and send back, it might be awhile. I might just drive it until it breaks and then upgrade.

If you look in the pic, its mostly on the bottom of the coilovers. You can see the dark spot on the lower control arm too. Nothing like that on the other side, only this side. I’m going to wash it real good tomorrow and I’ll post some better pics if it keeps leaking that bad.

Don't think driving until it breaks would be a wise decision.

Here is another pic. Tried calling the seller and got their after business hours message even though it wasn’t according to the hours on their website. Still waiting on an email back.

When I said drive til it breaks, I mean til I have to replace it. From what I’ve found it won’t just snap in 2 or catch fire and kill puppies. Looks like it will just stop dampening when hitting bumps, like there was no shock at all. Now I know to feel for that and will replace it when it gets that bad if not before.

You will get some handling issues and probably some rattling before total failure as long as its just a seal leak.

Something I didn’t think of as it seemed the only way to order these is by set. I realized there was individual part numbers. Found a thread on here about it and confirmed it on my shock. Searched the part number and found some on eBay and at one store for $135. So I’m going to order just the shock and replace it. Still haven’t heard from the seller I originally ordered from regarding warranty.

Here is the thread. Part number for just the shock was 24-235310.

Are you sure its leaking? How much pressure does it take to compress the shock. Bilsteins are known to puke some oil when beat on, that does look bad but I would clean it up and make sure.

In the past I have warrantied through the seller by buying a new replacement, sending the defective unit back and seller refunds me the cost back once defective unit is received. Probably depends on seller but never hurts to ask.

It compresses pretty easy by hand. This picture was not long after a thorough power wash too. There was oil splatter all over the wheel well and a lot on the lca. Other side is clean.

This, I have sent my Bilstein's back about every 2 years due to leaking. Ya buy the new one, send the bad one back and they refund ya.
