So I was thinking... if I add a 38 gallon tank or even expansion tank would the extra weight of gas when tank is full affect the mpg of the smaller v8 to a more noticeable difference when compared to the bigger v8? Trying to see if it’s even worth the “extra miles” before having to fill up so soon on the 26 gallon tank.thanks for all responses in advance.

I can't imagine it's 'worth it' unless you genuinely need the extra range of 12 gallons, so that would be about what 12x17=204 extra miles compared to 26x17.

So range may increase (at 17mpg) from 442 to 646. Few places in US that don't have fuel even 300 miles apart much less 442 or 646. Just saying.....

Luck and enjoy those Toyota projects. : ^ ))))

The additional expense of the conversion makes it a bad idea imo, but everyone will have their own idea what convenience is worth. The additional gasoline will only weigh about 72 pounds.

I’m seeing some discrepancy in the math from the replies.

The way I read the original post was that you wanted to add a 38 gallon tank to bring the total capacity to 64 gallons (26+38).

Others have interpreted your question that you want to add a tank to bring your total capacity to 38 gallons.

    Which one is it?

The first option (64 total gallons) would add 228 lbs when you fill up. As another poster said, going to 38 total gallons would only add 72 lbs

Good point. I was looking at total 38 gallons. Didn’t think about much more than that since I already run 33” LT tires and it’s 4x4 and of course a small lift and that setup already hurts the power feel a little. I guess I was really wondering if I might feel like the 4.6 is lugging around an extra load all the time with a 38 gallon tank or if the “extra weight” might hinder it more on say like highway passing and take off from red lights. Or I might not be able to form the right question for what I’m thinking. And thanks for your input good sir.

Theres a company that makes an aftermarket 50 Gal gas tank but its pretty pricey...maybe like $2000?

You won’t notice it. You’ll notice more from heavy tires. You can always run a Jerry can or two for the times you are worried about range, saves you a ton of money.

most stuff I’ve seen is $1500-2000 plus shipping / install

I considered going to a 34 gallon in my Tacoma but 3 Jerry cans is a whole lot cheaper..

Oh shoot didn’t even think about the jerry can route. Duh. That would be cheaper by a long shot and leave me extra money for bed rack or cover. Thanks a lot. Great idea.

Possible to mount on tailgate area, in the bed against the back of the cab, or even on a bed rack. Those are the first possibilities for me. Just have to consider what other purposes I have for the truck setup to optimize space and keep weight down.Im pretty sure there are pictures of other setups on the forum. Just have to search a little.
