I’ve decided I need to part ways with my guns due to some family related mental health issues. For said reason, the guns are not currently in my home but these are the most recent pics I have (Browning A-bolt 30.06 and a Benelli Montefeltro 12 gauge):

    upload_2021-9-11_21-58-51.jpg

    upload_2021-9-11_21-59-2.jpg

    upload_2021-9-11_21-59-11.jpg

They’re great guns, lightly used, well cared for. I contacted my local Bass Pro but they’re not buying any guns at the moment. This is the first time I’ve ever sold a firearm so I’m not really sure what the best options are. Anyone have recommendations or tips for selling these along with ammo?

I wouldn’t mind selling to someone here on the forum, but would prefer to start local. Thanks in advance!

Check to see if there are any local gun forums in your area. Here in the PNW there's a pretty active forum where people frequently buy and sell firearms. Obviously check your state's laws (here in Oregon we have to conduct all private transfers through a FFL), but I'd imagine it's a fairly-easy process. Just do a bit of research to make sure you're all legal. Good luck!

Just did a quick search based on your indicated home state:

Ive used Armslist many time with no bad experiences for the most part. They charge you now to make an account, but I dont think its anything significant. Easiest way to sell it locally. Cant speak for your state, but we can sell long guns to surrounding states, just not handguns. Like stated earlier just check your states laws.

You'd probably be able to find some local members interested if you had an idea on the prices you want. I think @Azblue and @FrenchToasty are in SoAz.

    It is hunting season!
That 12 gauge looks super nice, probably to rich for my friends pocket book.
Get an idea of what you want for them, and post it up in the AZ BS thread
The gun sales laws are super lax between private parties, but I don’t even have a clue of what needs to be done when you do sell one, I think just a bill of sale to cover your rear.
My friend might be interested in ammo

Take them to a reputable Local Gus Store and sell them on consignment. Gun shops will usually only give about 40 to 50% of what they are worth if buying them outright. AZ gun laws are some of the most lax in the country but ultimately there is personal liability when selling to someone you don't know. Also find a gunshop that sells on Gunbroker, that's where you will yield the most money as long as the consignment fees aren't more than 15 to 20%.

    What @BuckWallace said…

that forum is the “sister” to the one we have in the PNW and is a great resource.

I’m also sure you could find a buyer here on Tundras easy enough.

Selling to an in-state buyer in AZ is pretty straight forward - you only need to confirm you both live in the same state and that the other person, to your knowledge, is not a “prohibited person.” Most people will check drivers license to confirm residency, and may ask for a view at concealed permit (to confirm the rain has passed a background check at some point), though I know a lot of order in AZ don’t bother with a permit because it isn’t required in the state.

It used to be that way here in WA and OR but not any more - we now have to do the transfer through an FFL with the background check and everything.

Doing a Bill of Sale is entirely up to you and your piece of mind. It is not required by law. A firearm in most states is only “traceable” from the manufacturer to the first selling dealer (in the event of being used in a crime), who then must sift through their 4473 forms to report who it was transferred to. If that trace goes to the first buyer and they later sold it through a legal private party sale, they simply only have to report that they sold it and don’t recall who exactly they sold it to. At that point, there isn’t anything else to trace.

That said, @IgotSR5onit is not correct about selling out of state. Federal law requires that ANY sale between parties that do not reside in the same state must be handled through an FFL - both long guns and pistols. When buying a long gun, the FFL can be licensed in either the buyer’s or the seller’s state, but handguns and “other” (receivers, etc.) must be done at an FFL licensed in the buyer’s state.

Finally - Doing a transfer through an FFL (in state or not) typically carries a fee of $15-$50 (depending on the dealer) for processing the background check and holding onto the 4473 for the rest of their natural life…

nice looking rifle and shotgun. Hope everything works out on the family front, and good luck with the sale.

Guns like that should stay in the family IMO. No relatives that want them? Or friends?

I would also commend you on recognizing and accepting the responsibility that a situation in your own home might not be the best environment to continue owning, and taking the steps to correct that. That’s not an easy decision.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I hate to see them go but having them around isn’t really an option anymore, so it’s the best decision all around.

Like others said, bill of sale and you're good to go. I've seen sellers on Armslist requiring to see AZ driver's license, and prefer if the buyer has CCW. Anyone with CCW has passed the federal background check and should be good to go. How much are you looking to get for each one?

Probably $650 for the Browning (includes scope, hard case, and 63 rounds of ammo) and $1,650 for the Benelli (including hard case and 150 rounds of ammo). Like I said above, I’d really prefer to sell to someone local, so I’ll post up more details on the AZ BS thread in a little bit.

Selling them out of state should not be much of an issue.

    The buyer pays you.
The buyer sets up their local FFL to receive the firearm.
The buyers local FFL performs all necessary paperwork and then hands over firearm to buyer.

Correct me if I am wrong guys, but I don't think that you need an FFL to send a firearm out of state? Just to receive it.

Beautiful firearms (especially the Benelli)! Sorry to hear about your family member struggling with mental health, that's never easy.

While I am obviously not 100% certain of your situation, I would suggest a nice gun safe to keep them out of the hands of the individuals you are concerned about. A win-win for you and your family. You can keep your guns/ammo and they are safely stored away from anyone beyond yourself.

If that is truly not an option, take them to your local gun store, I am sure they would be willing to help out.

    Best of luck with everything!

A false wall can work wonders, solid closet door with hinges that don't have removable pins, with a plate over the strike plate latch area. Lots of options without buying a safe. Not to mention you can add trigger or action locks, even both. Plus ammo can be stored/hidden seperately. I have children, so I have redundant safety measures in place for my guns and ammo.

A piece of sheetrock can be textured and painted. Then add trim to four sides. Trim surrounding area to match. Looks like it is permanent. Easy to do a cabinet or bookcase back as well.
