The time has come to replace the front load washer and dryer. Never really liked them. Washer leaked from a hose on the top with larger loads and it stunk alot. Dryer made alot of noise. Finally the dryer went out so we are replacing both.

Want to go with a top load washer this time.
    Who has one?
    Pros and cons?
    What brand/model do you recommend?

    Really thinking Samsung, thoughts?

Ok just found this thread for more info:

Got rid of my front load washer...hated it! Went with Whirlpool top load as well. Have had it for a year and have had no problems.

Hear Speed Queen is the best. Miss my Fisher and Paykel that we replaced recently.

We have a new LG set, large capacity. Seems to do the job. One con, the controls or buttons are on the front edge. Easy to push the buttons when reaching down into tub, messing up the wash cycle.

Fisher and paykel is a good set, expensive, can be costly to repair

Speed queen has high operating costs but great washers

I have whirlpool and have had good luck. I like the steam option and bottom mounted dryer vent, you can actually vent mine from the left, right, back or bottom. One downside I have found is if I do a large load in the washer, sometimes i have to do a second "drain and spin" cycle to get clothes really dried out, probably just me over filling it.

Speed queens are next on my list. When one goes out, a speed queen will replace it.

I have whirlpool duet front loafers now, I know, took the blue pill.

So far in 6, almost seven years I have replaced the rubber boot on the washer once, and an idler pulley bearing on the dryer. This is not horrible by any means, but my dryer is starting to make noises again and I’m done with it. When it’s gone, no more repairs. Our total cost of repairs so far is 500.00, on 2400.00 washer/dryer sets. So I have 2900.00 invested in 6 years. That easily buys the top of the line Speed Queens with around 900.00 still in my pocket.

Speed queens are designed for a 25 year service life. These newer HE ones are good for 7 years or so.

3” lift, black step bars, aftermarket wheels, LT305/55R20 was this way when I brought it.
I know you said top loader - our is a whirlpool front loader we have had it for 12 years. Beast if you use it right it’s great. HE soap only very small amount liquid only, and leave the door open when done. No smell works great- I worked at Lowe’s for 13 years-
(Biggest complaint smell, too much soap and closing the door when done will cause it)

Speed Queen hands down. If it even crossed my mind to replace ours with something else my wife would probably kill me in my sleep, then divorce me.

Like Sean said, they're like the Toyota of washers. Very low tech (ours have the old school mechanical knobs/dials) but do their job extremely well, and very fast.

Unlike the new HE crap, a typical wash load is done in 25 minutes, AND, the clothes are actually CLEAN. Imagine that!

Fake news....Speed Queen washing machines are owned by Alliance Laundry Systems in Ripon, Wisconsin.

We have a Speed Queen and consider it to be the best washer on the market. There have been several threads on this subject recently and in each thread the Speed Queen is recommended by a large margin. It is industrial quality and will last you 20 plus years. It's easily the Tundra of washing machines.

As others stated. Speed Queen. Our last house I made the switch to the SQ and LOVED the things. When we sold the house the buyers we're pretty adamant about getting the SQ's so we let them go. My company had a smoking deal on some other brand, so I went back to a Front Loader.......As soon as the current front loader dies we're going back to SQ.

Nothing better than old school electromechanical for longevity. The things just work.

I've had my set for about 4 drama free years now. Replaced a set of 25 yo Maytags (which use to be the best before they were bought out and trashed by Whirlpool)

After years of conditioning to buy the ‘Name Brand’ (remember our parents appliances all lasted 20+ years), I have changed my Modus Operandi due to the ‘China Factor’ post 2003 entry into the World Trade Organization.

Best thing you can do now it go buy a scratch and dent no name brand (which is made by a major brand using same parts but not labeled). Buy the most basic machines. Ride them hard and when they break just go by new ones. Reason: Repair labor costs about the same as a new (cheap) machine!

If you are in it for looks, then use vinyl wrap on your machines. Makes a cheap white machine look like thousands!

Trust me on this based on years of experience.

Yeah I didn’t read the entire thing until just now. I snagged the link thinking it was going to be 100% positive like that usually are. I just know them for their outstanding cleaning and reliability. The new model sounds like it might not be perfect. I am sure you can still get the other models. I feel that this new model that they came out with trying to become foo foo sissy like the other washing machines LOL. Their previous version is a workhorse that cleans well.

I would take some of what he said with a grain of salt and do some more research on other models. It’s just one dude’s opinion.

Dammit, this is what happens when you take a Tundra and try and add all the frilly things to make them like the other big manufacturers. Or, the new model is the Gen 3 Tacoma of the washing world.

Isn't Kenmore re-branded Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, LG, etc? Do not believe Kenmore makes anything........

The whole clothes washing machine is a stupid political racket. You're being told you're a bad person if you don't spend a shit pot of money for a machine that will save the water and save the power plants from having to burn coal. In return you get a huge price, shit product and a crappy outcome ("why does my washing machine stink?").

I'm on my 2nd clothes washing machine in 23 years. The first one left 15 years ago in a divorce. It was replaced with a Best Buy Maytag open box unit for $200 at the time. It just keeps going and going. And it DOESN'T impart that Fumunda Cheese perfumey scent.

One thing to keep in mind with a top load washer is that the bigger size u go the harder it’s to reach tha clothes out. My wife hates getting on step stools or getting long tongs to get the close out since she can’t reach lol. Just something to think about.

    Lost track after #1.
My experience with Samsung home appliances has been very poor. Their TV's are great, but that's about it. I have a no-frills Whirlpool top loader washer and matching dryer now. The washer is one of those HE things. Not a fan of that TBH. I end out washing everything on the towels/sheets setting to make sure the tub has enough water in it. The next one I buy won't be an HE version if I can help it. Other than that tho, both the washer and dryer have been great.
