Truck’s running great, and I also respect its age. I always carry a few basic items (like a dc tire compressor) so I’m looking for recommendations on a portable jump-starter that’s robust and dependable without breaking the bank. What do you guys and gals trust?

There's a project farm youtube video that tests a bunch. Noco is very popular, i got a good deal on a gooloo (something like that) and been happy with it.

I recently bought a Noco to put in The Woman's Corolla. Good reviews and she used it once without any issues.

I've had a Noco for a few years now, worked every time I needed it.

It seems like NAPA has a good one for not too much. Their JS700A is less than. $65

The NOCO’s are great, use them for the boat and vehicles. Simple and safe. My 14yr old used our GB20 to jump my wife’s GX460 when a cell went bad. You can also use it to charge devices via a usb cord too.

I have a 2000 amp Gooloo that I've had to use a few times and it's been great! Jumped the wife's Sienna and our boat with it and it's worked every time. I've heard the Noco's are good as well.

I got a NOCO GB50 for the Tundra and has come in handy plenty of times! A lot of features and compact for the power. I take it out of the truck every 2 months or so just to top off the battery to make sure its ready to go! I keep it in the truck just to help others as well when they need a jump. Bought the molded carrying case from Amazon as well to go with it.

Just purchased a NOCO battery charger to keep at home too!

This past Christmas, I found this in my dad's garage. He used to keep it in his Jeep. But, since he no longer has that Jeep, and doesn't do much driving at all anymore, he gave me permission to "hang onto it for him". It fits nicely in my bed toolbox. Jump starter with a built-in compressor. It may or may not be top of the line, but you can't beat the price I paid.

    Too many, but not enough....
I really like harbor freight viking brand. It's not too expensive but it's not low end either, fair price and it's on sale often with a decent warranty.

NOCO GB-40 in my wife’s VW, and a GB-70 in the Tundra.

We’ve had them for about 5 years with no problems at all. Solid equipment and worth the money!

I have come to depend on Schumacher Jump Starters with Compressor. I used to buy cheap ones from the Sportsman Guide but I was having issues getting V8 engines to jump. I found over the years that you want to buy one with at least 1000 amps. It makes a difference. I have used the compressor more than the Jump Starter. It seems like a few times a month I am filling tires for older people (I am old to) at my Church on Sundays. I will notice their tire or tires are really down an I will ask them if I may fill it up for them. I check their other tires to. I just bought one of the small jump starters off QVC called a Halo. I will see how it does. It has a compressor also but I used it and it over heated and turned off. I guess you have to fill your tires up a little at a time. I have a jump starter in all my car/trucks.

I have had the unfortunate opportunity to use some jump packs at work. As far as the modern, compact ones, NOCO seems to rise above the crowd. They jumped vehicles that were not able to be jumped by others. In fact the one that had failed to jump the vehicle was plugged in and charged. This NOCO was just sitting around, not plugged in, and had jumped a couple other vehicles beforehand.

I am tracking Amazon prices with camelcamelcamel.com, waiting for the GBX45 to drop below $120 for my own personal purchase.

I tried to get an all in one, with a compressor for example. Nothing ever works well when they design it to be a jack-of-all-trades, IMHO.

This one is a bit lower end but I have used it more times than I care to count and it has never let me down. Starts my tundra and I have jumped a few duramax and cummins with it as well.

I love when some old ass man tells me "there is no way that will charge a battery"
"You are correct, this isnt a charger, its a starter, step aside grandpa, watch what the future can do!!"

So my experience is that it just depends.

It depends as much on the actual connection that you are able to make with the clips you use as ut does the condition and output of the jump box itself.

You have to remember how important to this process the connection can e and try to get the best connection that you can and if a unit that has worked before but will not work now it is likely that it might just be the way it is connected.

I say this because I have and use a bunch of different packs from the tiny Lithium powered like the NOCO up to the huge and heavy old school packs and without exception they all only work some of the time.

The only real variable is the connection to the battery and in 12vdc circuits wiring loss and voltage drop are a significant factor always!

So I far prefer to carry the tiny packs and they are usually amazing to watch when they work but when they do not I just usually jack around with the clips and they magically work again.

I have the NOCO XL GB50 and am quite happy with it. Small and easy to pack on road trips and will jump most any car/truck.

I found this item on Amazon's lighting sale stuff last year. Yeah its 'cheap' China stuff yet its turned out to work super well for me. I've used it a couple times to help others jump a vehicle, instant, rapid engine turnover, lots of 'strength'.

But what've I've learned to love about it is the tire inflation feature. I own 4 vehicles plus my kids so topping off 24 tires is a breeze. Then there's the riding mower and 3 quads, makes it EZ and fast. Just dial in the desired pressure and let it go, stops automatically.

My old DieHard jumper died on me. So I replaced it with this Dewalt. I've used the inflator twice, and the jump starter once. So far so good. I plug it in at the beginning of each month to keep it charged. Or if I need to use it, I charge it back up the first chance I get.
