So had a laser cutter for a while and just started to mess around with engraving and cutting leather. Did a quick keychain design tonight .. thin 1.5mm leather with a 3mm birch plywood core for some stiffness. Working on getting my burnishing down but not bad for a few minutes with water and beeswax by hand. Lasercut but hand saddle stitched ... I know my way around a sewing machine but am not very good with hand stitching. I think it came out ok-ish though! Photo is from before any burnishing so there's stragglers popping out.

If there is a need to sure. Right now i'm just messing around with a new material I've never dealt with on the laser and pretty much working with cheap scraps of leather. Of course leather craft is much more expansive than just simply cutting templates and putting them together. I'm learning alot from it and gotta say it's pretty fun!

Thanks! The edge is less than perfect and on the other side I ripped the leather on a stitch while sewing the 2 halfs together. Makes it handmade and unique though .. at least in my mind :)

You could dye the engraved leather portion in a different color die after getting the laser char out. Paint might also be an option as well. All things i'm planning on exploring! Just having fun tinkering at this point. Bonus is the wife is totally into this stuff so at least she won't be bugging me :)

Maybe a group buy at a later date when it's less ... well amateur. I'm learning here but not sure i'd actually sell one yet .. free samples maybe. I'm not very creative (engineer by education) so if anyone has an idea let me know and i'll send it to you if I can.

Yeah wife came to the garage one day and said "WTF is that thing?". Uhhh it's an um laser cutter. "WTF did that cost us?". Well um ... Fast forward 2 months later and it's "I have to make something for the PTO and blah blah blah ETSY blah blah ... and now i'm spending my nights cutting oversized scrabble pieces. Meh she's happy and leaves me alone to do my thing 75% of the time. She also has figured out Inkscape and does the designs so I only have to cut them on the laser. Overall not a bad deal.

I used to go Tandy's years ago. Tandy's was affiliated with Radio Shack of all things. You could buy different types of leather, leather work dies, and mallets. My dad taught me how to make ornate belts, holsters, wallets, purses, and actually chaps. This makes stitching much easier...upload_2019-9-11_20-35-44.jpg

I still have all my leather work tooling in storage including some chaps I made years ago. Very cool hobby.

Didn't they make computers at one point for Radio Shack? I have memories in the mid-90's of working on them.

When I was a kid, my dad did some leather work, made belts, saddle repair, etc. He got a lot of materials, tools and supplies from tandy leather. There was a tandy leather store in Greenville SC, back then.
