Alright boys and girls, as the thread title says, I'm on the market for either gas or charcoal grill, currently I have both, but are showing their age, the gas one I have is a Ducane 5 burner with a side burner and top rack burner as well, it looks great on the out, it's a stainless steel grill but the inside burner covers are going out, I've ordered em 2x's, all the ignition switches are old and expensive to replace, I have to light with those super long matches, the bottom part that catches the grease to drain down is rusted out, I clean it every time I use, I hate to get rid of because it belong to my father and we had lots of uses with it together

As for the charcoal one, same story belonged to my father with many uses, it's a Brinkmann and the burner grill can be raised or lowered with a turn of a handle on front, and a door in front as well that comes down to spread fire or to add logs of firewood or coals, it has two side trays that can be put in place or lift up and lay flat on each side, father added wheels so it can move easily around, it's not stainless, it's metal, so the legs at bottom are rotting away and I'd have to weld new ones, both side trays at bottom are rotting away, and I've looked online for parts, can't find anything, hate to part with it

Like to see what you guys and gals have,

The other day after work I went to Home Depot and saw one from Char-Griller that was gas AND charcoal, but cooking surfaces were kinda small

Also, just remembered, I have sitting in the corner in my garage, from my father as well, is an Old Smokey electric smoker, I've never used

Alright, show me what you got!

Well buddy how much $$$$ do you want to spend?

Heres what I have cooked on for years.

Started with a weber kettle, 18in, cant go wrong, can do just about anything from grilling thru smoking. Upgraded to a weber performer with the cart, 22in, more space, fancy ash can on the bottom and that cart top is great. Again cant go wrong there can do anything from grilling to smoking...I picked the performer up on clearance for $150, normaly closer to $400.

Then I got a Egg, great more money to throw at this crap LOL...

What do I like about the egg, the fact it holds temps better than the weber. I can smoke on that for 20 hours and not need to add fuel, its nuts. I can get it rocking 700 for home made pizza that's pretty damn good, can bake on it. Lots of accessories for it, but the cost, initial set up was $1200.
You can get other ceramic cookers for half the price, and they perform as well from what I have read, and some of the BGE accessories will work in them. I chose the egg due to a local dealer that delivered and set it up, those things are heavy.

I have never used gas or the pellet grills so I cant really comment on those.

Good luck in your quest. Hope this helped some.

Heck I forgot about the Weber smoky mountain, great smokers but not set up to grill, you can but you only use the bottom part of the smoker.

If you haven't bought a grill in awhile, you're going to have sticker shock. My suggestion would be to go on Amazon and search "grills". Figure out what style/features you want, then sort by average review and study the results.

This is our replacement for the previous same model (Commercial Tru-Infrared, 3 burner w/side burner). We liked the way it cooked, so we bought another. Fifteen percent of Amazon reviews gave it One star, not a good rec. I usually shy away from products with One star reviews in high single-digit percentages, and over ten percent, I shun them.

    https://www.lowes.com/pd/Char-Broil...opane-Gas-Grill-with-1-Side-Burner/1000107411

They have a four burner model. Indirect infrared cooking does keep the meat juicier, but it still has grilled flavor. Unfortunately, not a lifetime grill due to the painted steel cabinet. I think we got almost seven years out of the first one. Porcelain grill inserts should reduce the maintenance cost. First one, I had to replace grill inserts (SS!) after 3-4 years. The stainless cover and doors is, like all of them, pretty much for show (like on refrigerators). What's the point of wasting SS on the top and doors if you're going to set it on a carbon steel cabinet?

If you want long life, those Egg grills ($$$$) may be the way to go, but you'll still be replacing burners and cook surfaces.

I've got an older Junior and while I like it I'd look really hard at a Green Mountain or Rec-Tec if I were buying a new one.

For gas it is hard to beat a Webber. I have a Webber that I've had for 11 years that is still in good shape. I've replaced the grates, and flavor bars, but that is it. I also have a Blackstone griddle and a RecTec pellet smoker. They all have their place.

Bro I am in the same pot. Had my house built and had the builder add a natural gas hookup in the back just in case. I was thinking a decent gas one and an old school weber for coals. Personally I love the ease of gas but lover the taste of coal. Eventually I want to get a nice smoker or pellet smoker. But thats not right now. Building a house and filling it, moving to TN from HI and paying for a wedding has me tapped out. Honestly I may scroll CL to find a decent used one IDK.

My gas one will be the infareed ones as my dad has it and I love them for the ease of cleaning

Lots for great choices. Each option has its benefits and pitfalls so to speak

As for my egg well I have warmed up and launched. Smoke/roasting brats and beef sausage.
Be about an hour and a half. Get all nice and smoky.

Big Green Egg, mostly for smoking and a 17 year old Weber Silver B gas grill with cast iron grates for quick grilling.

That old Weber just won't die. It even has the original, still working igniter.

Went to CostCo today and they had a Traeger rep selling this size Traeger for $799 said it normally is around $1300

Wonder if it’s worth to pick it up at $800. How much is a decent gas grill? Half that?

I think there is a place for both gas and charcoal. And smoker. It all depends on your style. I have 7 grills, because I like to cover all the bases.
I prefer a real wood fire, and then grilling on the coals from that , but that takes a long time, so it is only done over weekends. During the week I grill on propane, and it works just fine; quick and easy. Then every now and then we want pulled pork or ribs and I fire up the smoker.
I just recently got a pellet smoker which is a 8-in-1; It can be used for smoking, grilling, searing etc. and I think that might be a good option if you only want one. But it won't work for you if you believe in seeing the flames like the hardcore woodfire enthusiasts do.

I agree. I like having both gas and charcoal. I'm a big Weber fan and have both a Genesis Propane and Performer charcoal grills. I also have their "Jumbo Joe" for travel.

I prefer the flavor or Charcoal but don't always have the time for that and depending on what you are cooking, its not always worth the extra time IMO so like Boerseun, I'm mainly gas during the week and charcoal on the weekends.
