    Greetings,

My name is Gabe. I'm 35 yrs old, live in Corpus Christi and graduate from ER residency next month. I'm married with 2 kiddos and have too many hobbies. One of my true passions is motorcycle adventure riding...but I can't exactly take two young kids and a wife who isn't crazy about motorcycles along.

Thus enters the Tundra. I am coming from a 1997 Mustang Cobra that I owned for about 8 years and had a lot of fun with it.

I went to the Toyota dealership with no real plans on buying, but the 0% interest swooned me. I had settled on a white 1794 but my 4 yr old really liked the barceonla red on the show room floor. Much to the dismay of the salesman (after he had already written up the white one) we went for it. My first new vehicle.

    As I bought her:

With the exception of the pathetic JBL stereo I was perfectly happy with the truck when I bought it. Then I found this forum....

First order was to upgrade the audio. Wanting to keep the stock HU, I opted to just change the amp and speakers. I used a budget Cadence/Pioneer setup but am very happy with it. I used a RF maestro to decode CANBUS signal, a cadence 5 channel amp. Middle dash speaker is disconnected. For the front doors/side dash speakers I installed a 3-way component setup and rear doors got matching 2-way components. For subs I installed a couple of pioneer 10's. Its not competition level...but sounds pretty friggin good.
    IMG_0272.jpg
    IMG_7156 3.jpg IMG_7157 2.jpg

It was then time to get the stance right. I settled on Bilstein 5100's at the middle setting. Figured out how to change them without a spring compressor and had it leveled for $190 (plus alignment)
    IMG_7168 3.jpg

I have never been a fan of the tube style side steps and have always liked the AMP, so after hunting around on eBay, I took advantage of one of their sales and picked up a set for about $900. Install was pretty straight forward (though I can't find any pictures of the actual install)

I was now pretty happy with the truck...or so I thought. It was about this time that I started looking at the "Wheels and Tires" subforum, dammit. It was also about this time that the Wife and I started planning our "after graduation trip". We have decided to take a 2 week camping trip through the southwest. So naturally, I told myself that I need a proper off-road tire. And since I'm buying tires...I should just go ahead and get the wheels too..right?!?

After reading about 314,889 threads on tires sizes and "will it fit" threads, I decided on Icon rebounds and Nitto RG @ 285/75/17. And before anyone asks....take off the front flaps and push front liners up, and yes they'll clear:)
    IMG_7774 2.jpg
    IMG_7773.jpg

Next up was color matching. I really tried to like the chrome, kept telling myself its classy and timeless but couldn't convince myself. I started looking at options for the bumper and finally decided to just paint them myself. Sanded the shit out of them with 220 on a DA, applied an epoxy primer, base coat and clear. They turned out really good. All in, I only have about $100 invested (had left-over primer and clear from a motorcycle project)
    IMG_7853.jpg
    IMG_7854.jpg
    IMG_7855.jpg
    IMG_7857.jpg
    IMG_7858.jpg

As luck would have it, it was about this time that Cool Springs Toyota started running a sale on some of the color matched front end components. Thanks to a kind forum member that offered to 3D print a radar relocation bracket (that has worked flawlessly) I was able to "backdate" the front end to my favorite TRD style.

    IMG_7867.jpg
    IMG_7899.jpg

So now it was time to start preparing for the trip. I really liked the idea of RTT and started looking into it. This forum is such a double edged sword. All the info in the world which is fantastic but holy credit card...

I decided to go with a budget friendly smittybilt overland XL and bed bars from Tacomapocalypse. Not knowing any better, I think the tent is great and the bars are top notch. Of course I had to add some accessories to make it look cool.

    57583913333__4D509592-C6B2-41A7-97B8-0D3CA176A6C0.jpg

I knew I wanted Maxtrax, so I welded up some mounts and used their mounting pins (though I had to shorten the top pin to allow room to open tent)

I wanted a quality axe and decided on Helko Werk (German) axe and hatchet set. Honestly not sure why I splurged on these. I'll probably never use them enough to justify the cost. Any old hardware store axe would have been more than sufficient...I digress. I welded a rack and secured them using quick fists. I found a nice long cable lock to secure them.
    IMG_7896.jpg
    IMG_7861.jpg
    IMG_7893.jpg

I also added a fishing pole mount and a water port

    IMG_7894.jpg
    IMG_7895.jpg

Pro-tip...when working on bedrack, make sure grinding sparks don't hit back window. it'll etch the glass. Not my finest moment (it has since been replaced)

    IMG_7891.jpg

After buying all this camping gear, I figured I should build a chuck-box to hold it all. One 3/8" sheet of plywood and a lot of sawdust later...

    IMG_7908.jpg
    IMG_7909.jpg
    IMG_7910.jpg

Now that we had the essentials, we had to take it on a test run. Choke canyon state park is only about 1.5 hours from us, so we went to check it out. As far as state parks go...its ok. Probably not worth going out of your way for. But we were able to get a good test run before the big trip.

    IMG_7944.jpg

Thanks for checking it out. I'll keep updating as I go.

    Wish list:
    4.88 regear with LSD
    OV tune
Suspension (ADS vs Elka) still deciding
Supercharger (I'm sure this is on lots of wish lists)

Went in for the 10,000 service and this Taco was sitting on the showroom floor. Suspiciously similar to mine. Imitation is the highest form of flattery after all :)

Well I'm certainly impressed! Ka-boom right out the gate. I've got a 4 year old grandson that's constantly giving me his opinions on things. heh..heh. BTW, I was born in Corpus Christi a loooong time ago.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the warm welcome. Looking forward to building some memories next month

One other mod that I forgot about. I added a Smittybilt compressor. I bought a $30 mount of eBay. It was well built but too tall for my compressor so it took a little modification. Put a small blue sea brand distribution block on battery and it’s up and running

I'm liking that mod. How much did it cost you for everything if I might ask???

A local auto paint store here in town. It’s super pricey, a half pint was $65

Any auto paint store can mix it up. I used a ppg consumer line called “shop line”. I bought a half pint. It’s reduced 1:1 so it makes a pint total. I was able to put 4 coats on with a pint

Would you be able to estimate a volume of clear coat that you used? I am contemplating getting myself an HVLP gun and some red paint....

In my experience, shops only sell clear in quart containers.

But to answer your question...if I remember correctly, I mixed up 400mL and that was good for 2-3 coats. So, 300mL of clear and 100mL of catalyst/hardener
