I just ordered a set of the black badges for my 18 Sport. In the past I have used fishing line to "cut" the adhesive to remove badges but this leaves a good deal of gunk on the paint. Anybody have a good technique they'd like to share or point me to an existing thread?

    Thanks

Use a heat gun prior to taking the badges off, then use fishing line as you would. Buy some Goof Off in a spray can, but use sparingly, with a microfiber towel to wipe off. Polish the clear coat well after it is complete.

They make black overlays that fit perfect over the stock chrome badges. That's what I have.

I have done the removal on other trucks before using the technique I just spoke of.

Heat gun can damage the clear also, so keep at a good distance on low heat.

Piggybacking on this, any tips for removing bedside decal stickers without ruining the paint?

Yea, those are coming off too, so any suggestions there would also be appreciated.

    Thanks

Rubber eraser wheel. Or a plastic razor blade with a heat gun for the decals.

I want overlays, but I'm finding them for $165 and that doesn't include the "limited" one that is an extra $60 on Ebay. Making me think I will remove and replace with new black ones. Did you find a better deal anywhere?

Those come off pretty easy depending how old your truck is. I was able to get my finger nail under it and pulled it right off. I then wiped it down and used some spray wax to clean it up.

What booradly said. 3m eraser wheel does wonders. Safe for paint. It defies logic. But it works great. Youtube is your best friend with eraser wheel videos.

The 3m one works great but it's very pricey. If you can find this pro-tek one it will be much cheaper. We sell them for about $8 canadian.

A heat gun will be your best friend....just have to find the sweet spot between not hot enough for the glue and too damn hot to touch.....a bit of goo-gone if needed and some good was and you are set!

I bought the set off of eBay for $116 but it does not include the limited badge. Says they are oem Trd Pro badges. Found the link in another thread on here.

Hair dryer is a safer bet and cheaper than a heat gun

I've watched a couple of you tube videos on the removal process and I have a question. Since I'm putting the exact same badges back in the exact same spot, do I really need to completely strip the old adhesive? Seems like it would serve as a perfect template to get the new badge exactly where it's supposed to be.

    Thanks

I could be very wrong about this, (and someone feel free to tell me how dumb I am, I can take it, my wife says it all the time) but I would think the new adhesive would bond better to a smooth, clean surface rather than to an uneven surface of the old adhesive.
To mark the spot, you could probably put a piece of painters tape just below the old badge and mark edges with a sharpie to mark your place.

Makes sense. Definitely using tape of some sort to mark the spot.

Absolutely. You don’t want to stick the new adhesive to the old stuff it will not sit flush and you could even run the risk of having the new badges fall off.

3M eraser wheel for sure for emblems. I used heat gun and goof off for TRD Sport decals. Came off very easy!

I used blue painters tape on bottom and sides of emblem so I knew where to put emblems exactly back.

To take off, I used a hair dryer and an old credit card since I didn’t have any plastic razor blades.

Welp, just noticed that the very corner of one of my bedside decals appears to be peeling up. Guess that makes up my mind for me on whether to take those off or not.
I wonder if I can get the dealership to remove them for me due to this?

As already stated all yo need is a heat gun/hair dryer, fishing line, and Goo B Gone. Did mine this way and it turned out perfect, quick and easy

I did this project this past weekend and everything worked perfect. Went ahead and bought a heat gun and it was worth the $22 on Amazon. Didn’t use fishing line though. I have a set of plastic pry tools that popped the badges right off after I heated them. The black badges look great.

Took all mine off including the sport bed decal...used fishing line and heat but still had lots of adhesive left, especially where the 5.7 badge was. Tried goof off and still had quite a bit of residue.
YouTube search found a dude who said gasoline will get the rest off.

Truck had about 2000 miles so I was nervous big time the gas would screw up the paint or clear.

Took a rag saturated is gas, wiped down the residue, immediately used a bucket of hot soap to clean the area after using the gas. Worked flawlessly, all the residue came off and no damage to the clear or paint.
