back up camera?

What is the best way to add a backup camera to a 2010 Tundra? I have just the basic head unit with no screen.

I had a pro shop do it for me. They installed a double din head unit with a back up camera installed just above the license plate. Placement and picture quality is actually the best I’ve ever had, even better than my other 3 vehicles with factory backup cameras. The stereo has Apple play, so GPS can be streamed to the dash screen. Cost about $750 and for me money well spent, because backing this beast up in tight parking lots is no joke!

That looks pretty nice but I would prefer a tailgate handle camera. Anybody have experience adding one of those?

 

I upgraded my HU to an

$280 alpine ilx-W650 digital multimedia receiver with carplay and android auto compatibility

alpine ilx-W650 that has capablities for 2 cameras (front and rear). I added an Alpine rear camera:it's glued to tailgate handle. hidden inside the handle. Aint' going anywhere.

HU was $280 and Alpine HDR camera another $140. I wired myself (pretty easy). Helps a lot imo.

yeah i did the oem tailgate camera and the overhead display but i have an 08. i believe the overhead was diff starting in 2010. either way, oem is plug and play if your truck is prewired. most are. mine is a grade trim, so not even sr5 and was prewired.

edit add: here's a pic of the plug where the camera plugs into. if standing behind truck it's on the passengers side (ie, right side) not driver. just fyi.

It is hard to tell from the pic provided, but beware of the tailgate handle many of these kits provide. It is a Chinese knockoff, which will fit, but the quality is poor, and many people have reported that it will break quickly. I tried one for my camera upgrade, and ended up putting it back in box and ordered an oem handle. The oem handle is much stronger, and the clips that lock the two actuator arms to the handle are much stronger.

 

I believe you could be right on that. I’m extremely happy with my over the license plate setup personally.

It hasn’t been jostled yet, even after my stupid self opened the tailgate with a load full of creek rock, and the tailgate tried to pop itself off, and rocks came down on the bumper.
