Hey folks - Anybody know if it’s possible to replace the plastic lens cover for the backup camera?

Or do I need to replace the whole tailgate handle and camera as a single piece?

My backup camera image is distorted pretty bad b/c the lens cover is distorted. I think it’s just weathered.

I not aware that the camera has a separate lens cover... mine gets dirty (my 2008 especially) but the tailgate handle just has a hole in it for the camera to poke through. The lens of the camera is part of the camera itself.

if your lens is truly distorted, you would need to replace the camera itself. That can be accessed by pulling the cover plate on the tailgate.

Anybody have an extra back-up camera laying around for a 2010 they’d like to unload?

If you think it's weathered, you can try some glass polish on it. If not, on ebay you can find oem camera replacement, will cost you around 150, no need to change handle , afaik.

I may have one available from my 2017. Does it fit the 2010?

I’m not sure. Maybe someone one more knowledgable than me can chime in.

@619Tundra can you attach or send me a couple pictures of it, as well as the electrical/video connections.

I bought the new Kenwood CMOS 740HD camera and want to get it installed on my new DMX1057XR Head Unit. Once I install it, I'll sell you the OEM.

I had a similar issue on my 2nd gen. I had factory nav with factory camera in the tailgate handle. The image was very blurry, I thought it was just a dirty lens also. I tried to clean it but no luck. I replaced the camera with a cheap $125 one from ebay and works perfect. It was not original toyota part, it was like OEM so it fit and plug in like the factory. I don't think the 2017(3rd gen) and 2010(2nd gen) share the same camera. When I was looking for a replacement, it had different part#. The two handles are also different so I think that makes the mounting points different. I think the harness plug may be different also. Good luck

    Great info., thank you!

I’ll start by taking the backing plate off and checking out the connections and mounting.

If someone has a 2nd Gen camera they’d consider selling, let me know. Thanks!

Anybody have a back up cam for a 2nd Gen?

I’d post in the “Wanted” section, but I don’t have 50 comments so I’m locked out. Thx!

    Appreciate that!

I’m kind of that annoying guy that always likes to buy used parts. I love selling used parts well! Just something about it that makes me feel like I’m winning.

Nonetheless, I’ll probably go the eBay route on this.

I did sooo many upgrades to my 2008 using the search tool on car-part.com (auto headlights, rewired for the 2010 head unit with USB and BT streaming audio, auto-AC climate control, etc...). But sometimes the price on the used parts still is ridiculous compared to some of the aftermarket stuff that is pretty much par to the OEM.

I have a 2013 with JBL and the backup camera image is horrible. I haven't found anyone that said just replacing the camera was a big improvement - did you replace the head unit too? I would LOVE to have a decent backup image as I use it a lot, but don't want to replace HU if i can help it.

Yes I kept the factory JBL navigation head unit. The back up camera image on mine was very very distorted and blurry. I couldn't see anything. It looked kinda like there was lots of condensation in it but was just a bad camera. I replaced with a camera from Ebay, and it works good now. While it's not the best picture quality like in some newer cars, it's good enough for me that I can tell what is behind me. In comparison, I also have a Sequoia with factory JBL navigation and backup camera. The new camera I got for my Tundra is slightly better picture quality but maybe that's bc it's new. I think we are limited on picture quality bc the factory screen is lacking. I did have a Pioneer touchscreen radio and pioneer backup cam in my other Tundra, it was definitely better quality than the factory stuff. Maybe in the future, I'll upgrade again to aftermarket stuff but like I said, it's good enough for me now.

I don’t think my truck came with JBL...at this point the HU is after market Kenwood. Nonetheless, my backup camera image is in the rear view mirror.

That’s exactly what I have going on. I don’t expect the image to be crystal, but currently I can’t see anything. Like you said, the image looks like glass full of condensation. I think a new camera will do the trick.

Back up camera from eBay for the win! Less than $100, and the image is great.

Took about 10 minutes to install, and the wiring harness had the 3 plastic mounting inserts pre-installed (and they actually fit/worked). Very happy with it.
