Ordered a 10" BA Muffler that will be delivered later this week, and debating whether or not to install the resonator initially.

I don't tow at all, and I want to hear the exhaust some which is why I went with the 10".

Ive searched and it seems about 50/50 with and without the resonator installed??

Would like your thoughts and experience??

I have that 10 inch SS system on my 2016. I installed without the resonator for several months. Sounded good but there was some drone. With my setup and tires, I had drone from 1500 to 2000 rpm. It actually was not too bad but it is there. Over time, it began to bother me, stereo needed to be at louder volume, and that done gets old on trips.

Finally decided to install the resonator. No drone at all, very pleasant in the cab and still has good sound with the throttle. The resonator did also tone down cold start, not that it was bad without. The truck also seemed to pick up a little better power and a little bump in MPG once the resonator was installed.

Great system- has enough sound but is a civilized exhaust, does increase performance. No mistaking it for stock. Personally, for my needs, I am glad I tried out the resonator, is more enjoyable all around for me.

That said, try it for a bit without. If the drone gets annoying, you can install the resonator without removing the tailpipe. It probably took me like 15 minutes to install.

I did the opposite - I installed with the resonator and then after a few weeks I removed it. As mentioned above, a little drone but not too bad (the real test is that my wife and kid who have issues with sound have not complained). Overall I like the sound of without the resonator a little better. (I wish that I had the 8" system but I picked up a used 10" for a steal so unless I can find a killer deal on an 8", I will stick with the 10.

Also, if you do install the resonator and prefer the sound without it, Keith sells a block off plate for the hole.

I had this exact same experience with the 8” SS muffler. Ran it without resonator for a while and some drone 1500-2000 rpm. Truck sounds even better with the resonator, richer sound and I swear a little performance pick up too.

I got the 10" over the 8" cause I knew I didn't want to install the resonator and didn't want it to be too loud. Here is a video of sound clips at the end.

I have the 10 on a RCSB and drove without the resonator....once, the drone made my eyeballs nearly melt. Preference is kind of subjective.

I describe it as smoother, less rasp.

    Thanks for the quick responses.

I will run it without the resonator first, and then decide. The truck is not my daily driver if that makes any difference.

I run the 12 inch standard system. Just tried it without the resonator the other day. Re-installed it as soon as I got back. The exhaust has more of a tuned sound with the resonator and no drone. It’s quieter and less bass with resonator, but just better overall sound - my opinion.

I installed the resonator with the exhaust about a year ago. I asked Keith to include a block off plate in case I ever decided to go back to stock.

It was a nice day on Friday and I had some free time so I decided to try without resonator. Took a drive, and put It back on when I got home.

If you run with and without and decide you like better without, maybe we can work out a trade. My block off plate and cash for your resonator.

It’s not terrible without the resonator. Its just far louder. I feel like the resonator cuts interior sound by 2/3rds

I have the 10 and ran no resonator for about a year. Heard drone all the time especially at highway speeds. Even when I was on the phone via Bluetooth through my truck people would complain about how loud the exhaust was. Finally put the resonator on and couldn’t be happier. Wish I did it when I first got it. You won’t be disappointed.

    I run a 10 with the rez, it's perfect.
You already stated you'd run it without for a couple weeks, that is a great idea.
If you have wife and kids in the truck, you'll probably want the resonator.

The resonator is going to cut out that annoying drone you may or may not experience...
The drone hits around 1.5K to 2.5K RPMs without the rez.
That is right around 55 to 65 on the highway and that is where you'll notice it.
Not so much to notice when running around town.

The majority of posts say install the resonator. I like to do things right the first time. I bought a 2” craftsman hole saw today just in case..

No resonater for me. It kinda drowns out the wife and kids. I want to hear my purchase. Also, I don’t want to cut a hole in my tailpipe for a bolt on system.

Yeah I'm kinda reluctant to cut a hole in my tailpipe as well...
Think I'm gonna run it without the resonator at first.
How long have you had it installed??

I’ve had several exhausts over 2 Tundras including 8 inch BAM and now the 12 inch BAM. I tried both BAMs with and without resonator. The drone on the 8 w/o resonator was way more pronounced than the 12 w/o resonator. But I hate drone so the resonator is a must for me. It will come down to your own personal sensitivity to drone.

I had my 10" without the resonator for almost a year. Installed it before a long road trip and was much happier.

I have a 10" with resonator welded on for my Sequoia. There is some drone around the 2000-2200 rpm which is typically my cruising RPM.

    More than a few.....
I really like this sound on your comparison. I been looking for the low grumbling, kind of gurgling sound, not necessarily loud, but a cruder, less refined sound, kind of like an old carbed V8. I was thinking to do the 8" system, but not too crazy about the resonator install. I think your video is now making me consider the 10" system with no resonator.

You wouldnt by chance have a video of you driving in the RPM range where the drone would be?

Got a unexpected early present today from FedEx!!
Installed the 10” without the resonator, and I am more than pleased. Yes there is some drone at different times but it’s not unbearable. I took my 4 year old son with me for the test drive and he fell asleep!
Thank you for your help and comments!!

    Glad to hear it.

If you ever want to sell the resonator I would be interested.

    Enjoy the system.
