There is a simple solution to this problem. It won't stop it completely but will slow it down. You require scrap yards to only buy converters from licensed shops.

 

Now if only 19 hands were to be severed as punishment, this practice would become much less prevalent.

Requiring shops to only buy from "licensed" shops only will create a network of crooks acting as "middleman" between thieves and those authorized to do business.

Want to stop it - create a turn in program where shops/recyclers can turn in x number of converters and be paid a premium over the material value BUT limit them to say 20% more than they can prove they recycled in 2020. In turn they cannot be in possession of an additional converters or face fine/loss of access to program.

Basically reward the honest 90% and allow law enforcement to focus on the 10% who won't participate because they cant/won't maintain compliance or agree there is no valid reason why their converter replacements and turn ins should spike just because platinum spiked in value.

 

Have no fear, LA County District Attorney George Gascon, will have all those arrested released in short order and stealing again in no time.

 

$750,000 divided by 250 cats (what they say they recovered) = $3000 per cat.

City Bo-hunks from Atlanta busted as a (East Point, Ga) man stealing 11 catalytic converters from trucks at a local business was arrested on Tuesday, March 9 after leading deputies on a chase.
