    Hey y'all

I'm considering upgrading my stereo system. Currently I have the OEM Audio Plus system in my Tundra (and it sounds great), but I'd like something more robust with more power and larger subs. Given all the great reviews of the equipment sold by james@tech12volts, I'm wondering if I can purchase one of his packages and have it installed locally. Is there a shop anywhere in Southern California that any fellow members would recommend that may have experience installing a system in a Tundra? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I had my system put in by Evolution Motorsports in Los Angeles. Not sure if they'd put in tech12volts for you, but I did take them my Kicker subs and sub box to put in.

I bought my sub box from Fox Acoustics. They make it specifically for behind the seat for a Crew Max Tundra and it takes 9" subs, I used Kicker.
The owner consulted with me on upgraded speakers and an amp.

Hey Monet, thank you for your input. I was thinking maybe I can just upgrade the sub (OEM Audio Plus offers a single 8 inch) like you did. If you could do it over again, would you buy the Fox box or something else? If I'm going to spend more money to replace an aftermarket sub, I want it to hit hard!

Yeah I’m happy with it! Two subs send out a lot of hard bass, but I also have a controller and can tune it down when needed.

    Hi Tony,

Honestly, I waver between just changing out the sub, a weak point in an otherwise basic system utilizing stock JBL speakers and OEM Audio Plus tweeters, to changing out all the speakers, adding a DSR1, and retaining only the stock head unit. My truck deserves it, lol.

BTW, I saw your thread where you pondered swapping your 20" Method NVs for another heavy ass wheel. I have the same wheels with 305 KO2s, over 100 lbs for a 33" wheel. Hanging out on this site has me convinced that I need to go 17s with 35s.

got it. Well if ur already debating a full system I would just do it. Of course if the cash is there. Changing ur sub out and keeping the crappy jbl speakers I don’t think your going to be happy in the end. I went full system and couldn’t be happier. If ur ever in the riverside area let me know and you can check it out and hear it.
For wheels yes I was debating but as I could of gotten 4 wheels for the price of 2 shipped to my door. But I’m in the same boat, I’m thinking about 17 rims on 35 tire. I have a 5 inch lift for now that’s why I went with the 20s I have now and got a killer deal on rims and tires.

Hey Mike, I think it is going to be hard to find a reputable shop that is willing to install a product that was purchased somewhere else. I am in CT and am currently trying to find one and nobody wants to do it.

I didn't think it was going to be a problem either, but all I keep getting is they won't guarantee their work because they don't know where the stuff came from and if it is legit. I really want to work with James because of his amazing reputation, I may have to just suck it up and do the install myself.

Thanks Tony for the offer. What full system did you get? And did you do the install yourself?

Do you mind sharing the cost of the all JL system from James? You can PM me if you don't want to disclose it here.

Thank you for the warning. I'll definitely call around first. And btw, I love your truck! It looks great.

I would be curious to knows if you would be selling your oem audio stuff after your replacement? I was thinking of adding that to my truck. What are your thoughts on the sound? I emailed Daniel to ask door a a listening session but haven’t confirmed anything yet. Thanks

The whole point in eliminating the oem audio is to improve, and you want to add more of it? If you're even a mildly serious audiophile, get better speakers, really good subs and an amp to power it all. It won't be cheap, but I'm not about jus the dollars..I want quality. My .02

Thanks Pinay for help steering my decision. I was hoping for that simple silver bullet. The forum has helped me order new WKOR sliders yesterday, so can’t wait for them to be ready!

Great to know about your installer! I have no clues yet on what to get. Did you replace the HU also? I was thinking to try and keep that stock, but we will see.

Yes I did replace the head unit with the pioneer 4200 I believe it’s not fancy but does the job. The head unit is almost as much as processors needed to keep head unit. Also the head unit has front camera input and hdmi cable so for me it was a no brainer to replace stock stereo.

    Hey Ken,

I should probably sell it. I have a bunch of stock parts that I've upgraded (headlights, grill, skidplate, mirror and handle covers, etc.) that are just taking up space in my garage.

I recall that the stock JBL system sounded very boomy and muddled, as if there was too much bass coming out of the door speakers. I couldn't stand it. The OEM Audio Plus system is a 100% improvement over stock; the sound is crisp and clear. I purchased the System 500 and had it installed at OEM Audio Plus' facility in Anaheim: https://oemaudioplus.com/toyota/tcm/ I guess I would liken it to a very good stock sound system as it will handle most people's listening requirements. If you'd like to listen to it, let me know.

For me, however, I can't leave well enough alone. I've been itching to blast some bass heavy music at ear bleeding sound levels. That can't happen with an 8" sub. Don't judge me.

Is the OEM Audo Plus system worth $1399? I don't think so. You can get a lot more for your money elsewhere. But they probably sell a lot of these as a simple plug and play solution, and that's what attracted me to it in the first place. I feel it would be a very good value at about half that price.

    Looks great!

Dude. That would be perfect. Hook it up!

Appreciate the honesty, just realized that since I have the JBL Headunit (platinum model) that limits me even further. I don't think that would work in my system.
Where are you located just in case I wanted to at least hear the differences.
    Thanks

I went a very simple route that made a huge difference. I ripped out the crappy jbl sub from mine and added a JL Audio 10tw1 sub with a jx250 amp. The signal is going from the stock jbl amp under the passenger seat to the jl audio amp to the sub. Fairly inexpensive compared to 1k plus solutions. Had mine installed at NU Image Autosports in Rancho Cucamonga.

I've been told that there are issues swapping out the head unit and retaining the new Toyota Connect system that's in the 2020's since that works through the OEM head unit - Anyone have any insight into that?
