Im looking at getting my 2015 CM regeared to 4:88 and the shop I called recommended putting a Auburn LSD on at the same time. My question is, is it really necessary to put one on or is the Auto LSD thats already on the truck good enough. My truck is my daily driver I'm getting it regeared for towing and to get it back to stock. But I take it hunting and some offroading but nothing crazy just normal dirt roads. Thanks

You can now get the Powertrax Grip Pro, a spider gear LSD. The Auburn used clutch packs. I tried to get the Powertrax back in Feburary but they were not expected until May. Covid delayed the release to late June. I had a 4k mile roadtrip pulling a camper scheduled in may, so I wanted the gears installed before that trip, so I went with the auburn. Matt at MCM fab had some Powertrax in stock 2 weeks ago.

Is the Powertrax Grip Pro manufactured in China?

I dont know if it made in China, but it is made overseas. When I talked to Powertrax, the person noted waiting on customs

I like the idea, but not if it's made with Chinese steel because they have a tough time getting the hardness right. Their steel is typically soft or brittle.

I too went with the Auburn in my Supercharged Crewmax. I was tired of constsantly getting new delivery dates from Powertrax. The Auburn is made in the USA.

I have been using a TRD/KAZUMA in my 2002 for about 17 years, it has clutches and it has never let me down. I'm sure the Auburn HD will hold up just fine.

2yr 100k warranty on a forged steel case what could go wrong... outside of multiple attempts

If its priced similar to the Auburn ill be the guinea pig here since ill be in the market soon for one after my ARH LTs go in. After using both brands in Mustangs id prefer a spider gear design over clutches especially in a heavy truck that will be pushing close to 500tq.

The ChiCom Powertrax unit should retail substantially lower than the Made in the USA Auburn unit.

Auburn should hold up just fine in a n/a tundra, but in a s/c tundra there has been plenty of cases of failure.

I had an Auburn in my SC 2010 with no issues. I’ve got another one in my 18 again with no issue other than I slide on ice more than I unexpected.

Yep, you need to shift into neutral while sitting on ice or the rear will come around.

Are there any documented failures of the PRO in a s/c tundra?

I have no plans to run a S/C, so I doubt that I would ever burn a PRO up.

Out of curiosity, have any S/C owners switched to a different rear end that that can handle the HP/TQ?
Years ago the Ford 9" or maybe a DANA was the way to go, but I have no idea what you would use today.

no one has switched out our 10.5 rear end that I know of, it handles the power just fine, just missing a true lsd. You’ll have transmission problems before rear end problems.

I have a Kazuma/TRD LSD in my 2002 and love it, so I have been researching the installation of an LSD in my 2007... Auburn Gear makes an LSD for 2nd Generation Tundra trucks, but I found the information available online was inconsistent and confusing - so I reached out to Auburn Gear with some questions.

I think you will find the answers to my questions interesting....

I asked what gear oil they recommended:

We recommend an 80/90 wt. NON-Synthetic oil which we offer, p/n 504107, and our additive, p/n 504102. The additive comes with our units when purchased new.

We do not recommend any type of synthetic oils, TransX additive or any oils that already have an additive in them. I also do not recommend Lucas. All of these will cause noise that can be severe in our units because of design.
I asked why I could no longer find a Pro LSD for the Tundra:

We only offer this in the High Performance. It will be as good as the Pro considering the size of this unit and strength to begin with. The biggest difference between the HP and the Pro is spring load.

I asked about the different spring loads:

We never offered the Pro Series for the 2007 and up Toyota Tundra.

    Spring Pre-Load H.P. Series 840 lbs.

Spring Pre-Load Pro Series 1800 lbs.

That is good to know, and I'm sure it's 840 pound spring pre-load will handle whatever my normally aspirated 5.7L can dish out.

I realize this is an Auburn LSD thread, but for the sake of it already being brought up, I just placed an order with Summit for the Powertrax Grip Pro (#GT501536) for my 2020. Dumping the 4.30s and installing 5.29s in two weeks so figured I'd grab a better LSD while I was at it. I guess I'll be the guinea pig to see if my rear diff catches the corona.
