Approximately 50 people are dead said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, just hours after a shooter opened fire in what authorities are saying is a domestic terror attack inside Pulse, a gay nightclub.

At least 50 others are injured. Police have shot and killed the gunman, Mina told reporters.

“It’s appears he was organized and well-prepared,” the chief said, adding that the shooter had an assault-type weapon, a handgun and “some type of (other) device on him.”

Law enforcement sources told CNN that the suspect had possible explosive devices strapped to his body and in his vehicle, but a U.S. official said later that no explosives were found.

At least nine officers were involved in the shootout, Mina said. Several coroner vans were seen traveling toward the nightclub.

One officer suffered an eye injury when a bullet struck his Kevlar helmet, said Danny Banks, special agent in charge of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Orlando bureau. The helmet saved the officer’s life, Banks said.

The shooter is not from the Orlando area, Mina said. He has been identified as Omar Saddiqui Mateen, 29, of Fort Pierce, about 120 miles southeast of Orlando, two law enforcement officials tell CNN.

Orlando authorities said they consider the violence an act of domestic terror. The FBI is involved. While investigators are exploring all angles, they “have suggestions the individual has leanings towards (Islamic terrorism), but right now we can’t say definitely,” said Ron Hopper, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s Orlando bureau.

Authorities are also looking into the possibility the attack was a hate crime, a law enforcement source told CNN.

    Shooting, hostage situation

The shooting began around 2 a.m., and an officer who was working at the club responded, Mina said. The officer engaged in a shootout outside the club, after which the gunman ran into the club.

“That turned into a hostage situation,” Mina said.

Authorities were getting calls from people inside the club but away from the gunman, the chief said.

More police rushed to the scene and broke down a door with an armored vehicle, helping some 30 club-goers flee to safety, Mina said. At that point police shot and killed the gunman, he said.

CNN affiliate WKMG video captured clubgoers carrying injured people from the club.

“It’s just shocking,” said Christopher Hansen, who was inside Pulse. He heard gunshots, “just one after another after another. It could have lasted a whole song,” he said.

Hansen was getting a drink at the bar when he “just saw bodies going down,” he said.

When the shots erupted, he hit the ground, crawling on his elbows and knees, before he spotted a man who had been shot.

“I took my bandana off and shoved it in the hole in his back,” Hansen said, adding that he saw another woman who appeared to be shot in the arm.

The nightclub posted on its Facebook page shortly after the violence began: “Everyone get out of Pulse and keep running.”

Orlando police warned residents to stay away from the area, and urged people not to call their offices. They declined to provide the number of casualties, saying details will be available later. Bomb sniffing dogs are on the scene.

    ‘Just bang, bang, bang!’

Pulse describes itself as “the hottest gay bar” in the heart of Orlando. Hours before the shooting, the club urged party-goers to attend its “Latin flavor” event Saturday night.

Jovial, well-dressed crowds heeded the call in an event that turned into a nightmare.

“It was just, bang, bang, bang!” party-goer Hansen said of the gunfire.

Ricardo Negron Almodovar said he was in the club when the shooting started about 2 a.m. He barely escaped.

“People on the dance floor and bar got down on the floor and some of us who were near the bar and back exit managed to go out through the outdoor area and just ran,” he posted on the club’s Facebook page.

“I am safely home and hoping everyone gets home safely as well.”

Anthony Torres, who was at the club, said he and his friends were leaving the club when the shots were fired just after last call, as the club was nearing closing time.

“The shots did not sound like a regular handgun. It sounded like it was shooting repetitively and it wouldn’t stop,” said Torres, who added that he saw at least 10 people who had been shot.

Tearful relatives waited outside the club as lights from police cars flashed in the background. Some implored the media to help them get word on their loved ones.

‘Just a lot of people screaming’

The sound of gunshots echoed beyond the club.

Jose Torres was clocking in to work at a Dunkin’ Donuts across the street when he heard them.

“It was something that I never heard before,” Torres said. “I had to run inside the store, and I saw just a lot of people screaming, crying. Just screaming and coming out running like crazy.”

Torres said he ducked into the Dunkin’ Donuts and called 911 as several people dashed out of the club, bleeding. Police and SWAT teams rushed to the scene.

“They don’t let nobody in or out,” he said. “The SWAT team is inside there.”

Authorities have conducted a controlled explosion near the nightclub, according to Orlando police.

Tom Fuentes, a CNN law enforcement analyst, said controlled explosions are used to breach a door or when a subject is barricaded in a room and police want to use a stun grenade to temporarily freeze their central nervous system.

FBI agents were also assisting at the scene, agency spokeswoman Amy Pittman said. President Barack Obama was briefed on the shooting and asked the FBI and other federal officials to provide him with regular updates, a statement said.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott tweeted, “My prayers are with the victims’ families & all those affected by the shooting in Orlando. We will devote every resource available to assist.”

    Hospitals on lockdown

Authorities urged caution as police officers hovered nearby with weapons and dogs.

A few miles away, the Orlando Regional Medical Center was placed on lockdown, the hospital said in a statement. Only essential workers are being allowed access into the building.

Relatives looking for loved ones were instructed to go to the medical center’s north tower with identification. Hospital staff will escort family members with IDs to a family meeting area.

Arnold Palmer Hospital and Winnie Palmer Hospital were also placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution, but the lockdown was lifted by mid-morning, officials said.

The mass shooting occurred only a few miles from Orlando’s Plaza Live theater where 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie, who had appeared on NBC’s “The Voice,” was gunned down Friday night.

I'd comment further about this but I'd better not. "The most painful goodbyes are the ones that are never said. "

But here's the thing...many clubs do pat-downs / purse checks to identify anything resembled as a weapon.

That, and many do not carry while drinking to prevent the obvious.

Smart move. Tundras.com is not the place to get too explicit about politics. As long as there is a "look at my little friends" post, there is a slight window when it comes to 2nd amendment "politics". I'm not going to preach about "left" or "right" politics here. Can't for good reason. Two exclusions...................(for me) 2nd Amendment AND to fight back against the folks that want to shut down 4X4 access. I fish, hunt, hike, you name it. In CO almost all funding for State Parks/Wildlife is from hunters/fishers. Guess who leaves the most trash??? Stoned hikers/safe place college kid zoners which does not surprise me. Not too many "safe places" in the mountains, but my tax $ will pick them up when "they" get too scared and realize there is a real world out there and have a chopper pick them up and take them home to Mommy.

What happened today had nothing to do with a bull shit pat down. The shooter by passed that minor check. Give me a break. AR-15 semi auto, multiple magazines and whatever else the shooter had. You do realize this was not a normal situation for the average bouncer/security guy??? WTF???

I'm sure he didn't wait to have his ID checked/pat down. I'm going to take a hunch and say he blasted the bouncers as he walked in.
But yes, many clubs will, and do do pat downs.
Think of it like the Rockies stadium. General pat, etc..obviously this jackass walked through it literally blazing bullets.

What's going to suck is now our gun control laws will be revisited, again...yet it only hurts the good guys.

There is no easy answer for this type of situation that occurred today or any day. Like I mentioned earlier, background checks aren't worth the paper they are printed on. You can't background check a "mind". Of course , the L**T is blaming the gun, not the shooter. It's so hard to explain to anti gunners,..........until something happens to them. The rare Godless folks fighting for USA military in war seem to get religion fast when shit hits the fan. Just sayin.

Thoughts and prayers are with all those affected. Sad to see another mass shooting, and now it's gonna get turned into ammunition in the fight to kill the 2nd Amendment. Our dear ol president is gonna blame the gun, not the person responsible.

Exactly my point on the CC thread. OC or CC carry means exactly ZIP against someone who's goal is to kill with malice. It comes down to : WHO do you want to pick the next 2 or more Supreme Court Justices??? If you don't care or don't follow politics, then don't complain and ask me for some ammo, food , water, batteries, diapers, 1st aid kit, etc if shit hits the fan when/if our GOV takes over our state rights. IE: "Convention of States". Do your own home work. I recommend revisiting pre common core history lessons. History has a bad habit of repeating itself. I know I'm not the only one. I remember my friend, Max Sands, probably passed away by now. He had numbers inked on his arm. "Max, are those numbers tatoo'd on your arm what I think it is?" My NAZI #. "I was the only survivor of my family". Max ended up being a major aerospace engineer for Northrup and then got into the high end leasing RF/Microwave business. He taught me me a lot. Don't even tell me "your" life sucks. Just sayin.

Where, no, I don't agree with the L**T lifestyle, but this is such a cowardly act of violence. And like most of you guys know, it's the gun that's going to get the blame, not the individual (or the radical state they affiliate with). its truly sad, the state the U.S. is in now. Even sadder is any politician or individual that sees through the fog and bullshit is labeled "racist" "islamophobe" and even worse "unamerican".
I agree, this great site isn't a soapbox meant for political reasons, but as far as I've seen, the guys and gals that belong to this site are good people with more than a lick of common sense, unlike some others out there that plead "patriotism" yet drain the system instead of contributing to it.

    Rant over.

In the possible event of the shit hitting the fan, what say we all plan on a place to congregate and make a new country? "Tundra Nation" anyone??

    Im in @Law323

    So sad that this happened.
What is crazy is that the guy was investigated to the fullest twice with nothing to charge him with. Cases closed. The first was because of radical comments he made at work and the second was they believed he had close ties to a suicide bomber.

He was a us citizen, worked as a security guard with plans to become a police officer and legally purchased the guns.

    Gun laws cannot stop crazy.

Ditto^^^Shooter was thoroughly vetted. Passed back ground. What can else you do?? This is more of a current culture thing somewhat. I can understand why someone may be intolerant to certain things, but so intolerant that you want to kill?? There is a lot of division in this country. There has been some division but not like the last 7 or 8 yrs. IMO
    You nailed it.

I was living in Van Nuys when the Northridge quake hit. After seeing what people were doing after a couple of days without power...........You get my drift. When i was in Florida, it never fails, hurricane warning........so many head to Wally World or home depot to get generators. Gee, hard to find/get a generator with a hurricane hours away. The smart folks, not necessarily survivalists, just smart, had power, food, beer, TP, diapers, water, candles, oh, and what a concept:: spare batteries and a flashlight and GAS.

Yep, The division is much clearer these days AND more dangerous @matluth
I keep waiting for a civil war or mass state secession announcement. In recent months, I've actually been reading up on survivalist books. (I hunt and fish, but suck at crop knowledge)

@RowdyRon i know it! I live 30 mins away from Nawlins and was here when Katrina hit. My family all huddled up at one of our houses with 3 or 4 generators, a crapload of gas, and enough food to feed a small village. We went a week or so without power and were perfectly comfortable. It's true, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Completely agree! It's a disturbing thought that our vetting and security programs are underperforming on this, especially with a threat like ISIS (who has repeatedly boasted of plans or actually infiltrating the U.S.) there are laws against murder, yet there's still mirder, same with drugs. How in the hell can anyone think gun laws will help?
You're right, gun laws cannot stop crazy, nor can stupid be fixed!

I'm thinking these upcoming years will be a bit crazier. I pray I'm wrong.
