Thanks. When I get the time I'm pulling the Tundra badges off and blackening them. Re did the black on grill but this time I pulled the chrome right off plastic. Made a few big diggers until I came up with a good method.

Time, a little a flapper wheel on my 4" grinder and my Leatherman.

I put a used flapper wheel on my 4" grinder and tried to sand down to plastic originally and that didn't work out well. I put a few diggers in the plastic. When I was running the sanding wheel after a couple passes I saw the chrome crinkle up which got me to thinking (after I f**ked up the grill a little) that it must have seperated so I made a couple quick passes on the chrome and started peeling off. With fear of destroying grill more I used the knife on my Leatherman and pried/cut between the copper backing of chrome and plastic. The big areas peeled off pretty good but small areas like the horizontal bars were more difficult. Then I started using the 4" grinder on the edges a little more aggressively to make those edges easier and with my Leatherman I got it done. I did not go beyond the edges or do the back as they wouldn't be seen. The chrome behind the plastic insert is not layered on copper so I was only able to remove it down the sides partially as the chrome was paper thin and tore easily. Good thing is the insert is not see thru so the remaining chrome is hidden and the paint made sure no chrome is visible.

I'm thinking I could do the entire grill in a couple hours knowing what I know now. The knife on my Leatherman isn't as sharp as it used to be either. Lol

I don't think it was the heat from the friction of flapper wheel causing the copper to separate as I tried my best heat gun to the point the plastic was getting soft and it didn't work. Maybe it was the vibration from flapper wheel or maybe it was the sliding action breaking the bond between copper and plastic.

Wished I knew for sure but I dont.

This is on a 2nd gen. The 3rd gen grill looks like it would be a lot more difficult but I think I could do it reasonably well.

Tried many of the tricks I could find online and nothing worked.

Had to remove front mudflap and bumper liner, coilovers set to 2.5 inches lift. These are the general x3 tires.

This is my second 3rd gen. Both on 17" wheels running 35's.
If I could go 16" wheel I would but brakes are the limiting factor.
I love the way the truck rides on small wheels and thick tires. Never really caught onto the 20" wheel with offroad tire look... Maybe I'm just old LOL.

My 16' ran BMF SSD Pro's w/removable billet rash rings. I had the rings powdercoated graphite and bolts blacked out. I also LOVED those wheels but you had to be specific where you mounted the wheel balance weights otherwise they could foul the calipers. Also they were heavy, >30lbs with the rings and with +6 offset you had to bmc to clear on 3" lift.

May look like it squats a little, I've ordered the Coachbuilder +2 shackles. I love the way it rides. BTW, those are "C" rated Ridge Grapplers, no difference but in the number of plys, but it gives a softer ride.IMG_3842.jpg IMG_E3841.jpg IMG_3843.jpg IMG_E3844.jpg

Hey guys, this is my first posting to this forum... Name is Patrick. I just got my Tundra a few days ago (2018 SR5 TRD Sport Crewmax) and I ordered a set of Method 310's 17" Zero offset and I'm wondering what's going to rub. They'll be my "winter wheel set" with my Observe 265/70R-17 tires. Nothing too radical but they do great when the roads are covered in ice. I traded in my Silverado and kept my winter wheels. Going to sell the 6 bolt rims and keep the tires for my Tundra. In a few months I'll be building the "summer set" with the more aggressive tread, so I'll need your help when that comes around too.

What are your thoughts on the winter set I'm assembling for my truck?

    What's a CMC?

Here's a shot of those 6 bolt wheels up next to my truck. Gives a pretty cool visual but you can see they're not mudders -lol

I bought 17" rock warrior wheels off craigslist and put them on my 3rd gen. Love 'em. Always confuses the guys who see them and know what they are though.

Very cool. Any rubbing problems or needed modifications to make it all work out? What offset are your wheels? Guessing 25+/-? The zero offset worries me about the 310's I have coming next week.

They're the stock +60 offset with 33.3" high and 11.6" wide nitto terragrapplers. No rub with no modifications.

Don't think the 310's come in anything other than 0 offset so this might be a fun experiment but I doubt they'll stick around. Luckily I can give them back no harm, no foul. That's a cool site Pat, thanks for sharing that with me. It would be fun to trick this truck out with all the tough aftermarket goodies but I'm a good year out from being able to go all in. I just need to get some good rubber under there for what I use this truck for through the seasons.

Let us know how it works out. A "CMC" stands for cab mount chop. It's also known as a body mount chop (BMC). Near the rear part of the front fender there's a body mount. It kind of sticks out, and some folks have experienced tire rub on it when running big tires, usually 35" or bigger. One way to fix the rub is to cut part of the body mount off - the part that sticks out and rubs the tire. It's advisable to then weld in a piece of metal to cover the hole left from the cut. Kind of hard to explain in words, but if you do a search you should be able to find photos of what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the info! I have a TIG welder but I haven't lit it up in many moons... A bit leery to start chopping my brand new truck -lol I just need to put some better rubber on some 17's to get the job done for now. Back in the day I had some steel rims with big rubber and it all fit in the rig I had, was hoping the same thing would hold true today so I'm just doing some research. This forum is really great in that regard. Thanks again!

Hey guys! I too am new to the forums and Tundras in general. I come from the jeep wrangler side of things. I just got a 2019 TRD sport and want to run either a 17 or 18 inch wheel with 8.5 or 9 inch width and 35s. The offset would be 1. Has anything changed on the 19s that I wouldn't have to do cmc or other trimming? Thanks!
