I am wanting to look at a truck for sale in North Charleston but Charleston is a 7 hour drive for me. The truck is at a dealer and the carfax says it's spent it's life in upstate NY. I was wondering if anyone lived in the area that wouldn't mind stopping and checking out the underneath and under hood for rust? I know this is probably an off the wall request, but the Tundra RCSB is hard to find. I have two possible candidates and am most interested in the one located in Charleston.

    Thanks!!!

    Which lot is it at?
Shoot me a private message with your phone number and I'll call. Might be able to swing by tonight, depending on where it is. Otherwise I could check it out wednesday

Ask the dealer to take pics of the frame etc. any areas you're concerned about.

Thanks Matt for taking the time to go check this out. Since it's a northern truck, just wanted more confidence that the truck isn't rusted underneath before I make a long drive. Hopefully it works out to be a good truck and I can put it in my garage.

I did, but they only sent one pic of the undercarriage and one of the engine bay and I see some concern areas that really need a closer look. Most of what I saw were bolts, easily replaced.

I live in waaaaaaaay upstate NY. They salt the dog shit out of the roads. It's ridiculous. I baby my Tundra and wash it once a week/10 days during the salt months. I've got a can of POR-15 handy when I move away though.

I'd be suuuuuper cautious. It'd be worth the trip to put your eyes on it. Especially if it's been on the lot any longer than a month.

    To anyone who's just curious:
I went and looked at the truck. From 20 feet away it looks great. Get close and your skin starts crawl and my spidy-senses were tingling. Looks like someone went after it hard with many cans of black pint and tried to paint over the frame. The rust was fighting back and eating through the paint on all the welds. Undercarriage looked like the truck was pulled from the ocean. Exhaust looked like something off a sunken pirate ship, rusty and eaten away. Top bolts for the coilovers had serious rust and paint issues on the threads. Truck looks like a good candidate for a corrosion recall frame replacement. My Tacoma frame was replaced and this looked 100x worse than my Tacoma. No visible holes or decomposing frame... but I think a few good taps with a hammer would reveal more. Hopefully whoever buys it gets a good deal. Disclaimer: This is my personal belief and not the word of a mechanic or rust professional lol

I found an old flashlight in the ocean once... the flashlight looked better than this truck.

    Matt,
I can't thank you enough for taking your time to go investigate for me. I will move on to the next candidate. Btw, the carfax showed this as a one owner truck but spent it's entire life in Watertown NY. I had to look where that is, but when I saw it was east of the Great Lakes I worried that rust would be an issue. The other truck I found is in lower Virginia and maybe I will take a look at it. The only issue is carfax shows a rear collision back in 2010. I figure probably not a big deal since the owner still kept the truck for 6 years after the accident. It just isn't as loaded as the truck in Charleston, but it's nice nevertheless.

I am new to this forum, being a 4runner owner, I spend most of my time on the toyota-4runner.org site. I owned a gen 1 Tundra, an 06 DC 4x4. Want to get another Tundra, but really like the regular cab since it's not going to be a daily driver and I don't need the people space.

Thanks again Matt and like mentioned, this is what the forums are all about. People who share an interest and helping others, just awesome!!!

    Rick

Yup. I'm 10 minutes from Watertown. It's a salt-hole and when the ice melts the "remaining asphalt" roads couldn't pass for Ramadi.
    Suspension is definitely gassed.

You can count on it. Maybe we can meet at Sesame Burgers in North Charleston and I will treat. They have the "Elvis burger" that's to die for. It has peanut butter on it, best hamburger I have ever eaten. ( I know it sounds gross). :)

They are for sure. I went there two years ago Memorial day with friends and we all got something different. And the burger I tried was the "Memphis" with peanut butter and banana, not the Elvis. But it was awesome. Now I need a road trip to Charleston. Have a good evening!!

Bought one, 2007 Reg Cab, 4x4, 5.7, 52k miles. Now I just need to figure out how to change my info in my profile to update the new ride.

    Hey Matt!

I'll be in Charleston the weekend of June 10th. It might be a long shot but if I can manage a few minutes away from family get together to meet a fellow forum member that might be a good reason to drink a beer.

    Are you around that weekend?

I'm flying in for a wedding but will snap off a chunk of time to drive my rental or parent's minivan to shake hands and drink a beer.

    Where do you live?
