Love Danes, but hate that they don't live very long...

I have two and fostered one. Can't recommend them enough! Check out PAWS of Austin, they specialize in rescuing Danes and they have events in Austin every so often.

    Here's my goofballs.

I have had three. Great dogs. Unlike any other out there. All of mine died way too young. I said I would always have one. But Now I am not sure I ever will again.

The last two dogs that I had were Danes. My female lived 10 years. I put her down because she had bone cancer. The last one I had, 185 pound male, lived 8 years. I had to put him down recently because he had some neurological condition that rendered his back legs useless in the last 6 months of his life. Both were excellent dogs, but I decided the heartbreak breed isn't for me any longer. My neighbor recently had German Shepherd puppies and gave me one for some work I did for him. I'm impressed how intelligent he is at 9 weeks old.

Oh, and if I did have another Dane, I sure as hell wouldn't put my dog through the ear crop process again. It sucked for him and myself. Almost a year of taping up his ears.

That kept us from getting one or a English Mastiff, we decided on a Doberman.

I had two, but my black one passed away last year. Now, I just have the Blue Merle. They are great dogs. You'll note the different muzzles between my two danes. The black one is an American line with a more pointed face and not as droopy...aka, doesn't drool much at all. My Blue Merle is a European line, with an extremely saggy face...aka drools like a faucet.

The lifespan has always been a concern. I feel that with good genetics and some research, I can find a good bloodline.

I always try to adopt first, so we’ll see what’s out there.

Burt also puts out special dog food, and if you read his web site his dogs live quite a long time...
